KOCHI: The Mannancherry police seized almost 600kg of rotten duck meat that was being transported from Nedumudi in Alappuzha district to be supplied to hotels in Ernakulam on Friday.
The matter came to light when the driver of a mini truck transporting the meat stopped at an ice plant near Kalavoor. "Local residents were hit by the foul smell coming from the mini truck. They blocked the vehicle and alerted us," said a police official.
Police along with food safety inspectors checked the meat and found that the meat was stale. They later destroyed the meat. Police arrested the vehicle driver Jayakumar Vishwanathan and cleaner Dileep Chandran. They were later released on bail.
On May 25, Ernakulam north police and the food safety department seized over 300kg of rottenchicken meat from a stall in Kaloor market that was to be supplied to hotels here.
