Rs 1.2L worth salted snacks seized at Karaswada

Mapusa: Unsafe food products, weighing at over one tonne, being transported from Belagavi to the Goan markets, were seized by food safety officers attached to the food and drugs administration (FDA) on Saturday.

Food safety officers seized about 1,020kg pipe salted snacks (kurkuri) worth 1.25 lakh at Karaswada. The truck has been attached and driver detained. Sources said that detergents and non-permitted colours are being added into the namkeen mix. The truck was transporting the food products worth 1.25 lakh. FDA officials said that the namkeen are prepared using non- edible food colour and deep fried in oil and are being sold in the Goan market without any label declaration as required by the food law. The food item, a hot favourite among children, has a huge market in Goa.

FDA had booked the said product in the past, too, and the court had imposed a fine of 2.5 lakh on the accused. A similar consignment worth 1.5 lakh was seized two months back form Karaswada, Mapusa and destroyed. The raid was conducted under the guidance of FDA director Salim Veljee, by officials Rajiv Korde, Amit Mandrekar, Richard Noronha, Madhav Kavlekar and Sainath Mandrekar.

FDA officials said that the possibility of the use of detergents in the making of such food items cannot be ruled out and that samples have been taken for analysis. Action will be initiated as per provisions of the law, they said.

Crackdown on watermelon sellers

Vadodara: In wake of the onset of summer, food safety officers of Vadodara Municipal Corporation conducted extensive checking of street vendors selling watermelons. Food safety officers checked 12 roadside outlets selling watermelons. Teams collected 17 samples from the sellers and sent for analysis at the public health laboratory. 

The teams also destroyed 30kg of watermelon found unfit for consumption.TNNand instructed the sellers to maintain hygienic conditions.
