மேலும் பஸ் நி லை யம் அருகே உள்ள ஒரு கடை யி லும் ஆய்வு செய் த னர். அப் போது விற் ப னைக் காக வைத் தி ருந்த சாக் லெட் பாக் கெட் டு க ளில் சந் தே கப் ப டும் ப டி யாக இருந்த சாக் லெட் பாக் கெட் டு களை பறி மு தல் செய்து, ஆய் வுக்கு அனுப் பி னர். மேலும் காலா வ தி யான பொருட் கள், போலி கடலை எண் ணெய் பாக் கெட் டு க ளை யும் பறி மு தல் செய் த னர்.
Health dept cracks down on shops

Health officials on Tuesday conducted a citywide crackdown following reports of petty shops selling ganja candies to children. They found one packet from a petty shop in Tondiarpet and sent this sample to the Indian Medicine department, who, by afternoon, confirmed the presence of cannabis in the chocolate.
Officials from the food safety and drug control department, police, and Chennai corporation, in four teams, raided 87 shops in Ashok Nagar, Perambur, Broadway , Sowcarpet and Purasawalkam on Tuesday .“Our intention was to seize such chocolates and we obtained one packet from a man named Motilal from his shop in Sundaram Pillai Nagar in Tondiarpet,“ said Kathiravan Rajagopalan, designated food officer. Officials also seized 187kg of tobacco products from near schools. Officials are plan ning to go ahead with the drive intensely for another week.
“We have issued warnings today . From tomorrow, we will start filing cases,“ said Kathiravan. A corporation official said they would start cancelling trade licences under the Public Health Act if they find sale of the substance.
187 kg of banned tobacco products seized in raids, vendor arrested
Action follows hospitalisation of a 13-year-old who ate sweet laced with ‘bhang’.
Following the hospitalisation of a 13-year-old boy who consumed a sweet laced with ‘bhang’, the Food Safety Department conducted raids in several parts of the city on Tuesday.
Four teams conducted raids in Broadway, Sowcarpet, Perambur, Ashok Nagar and Purasawalkam High Road and seized 187 kg of banned tobacco products from 81 shops. One vendor has been arrested.
‘Bhang’ is an edible preparation of cannabis used in food and drink.
“One shop in Tondiarpet had a packet containing 25 pieces of the sweet laced with ‘bhang’,” said R. Kathiravan, designated officer of the department. The substance, he explained, was similar to ‘puli mittai’ and was being marketed as an Ayurvedic drug and illegally sold to students.
“We have handed over the vendor to the local police,” the officer said.
Meanwhile, a doctor at the Institute of Child Health said the 13-year-old student had shown signs of improvement on Tuesday. “He is no longer on ventilator support. We are hoping he recovers soon,” the doctor said.
Fact-finding team
Meanwhile, child rights activists formed a fact-finding team and visited schools in Kodambakkam, including the one where the 13-year-old studies. “Apart from the corporation school in Patel Nagar, no other school has recorded such incidents. However we hope the children are not using it,” said S. Cyril Alexander, State Convenor of Tamil Nadu People’s Forum for Tobacco Control (TNPFTC).
Two other boys, who also consumed the drug-laced sweets in small quantities, complained of illness and nausea. “The boys were introduced to it by a vendor in Kodambakkam. We explained to the children the seriousness of the matter,” Alexander said.
“The boys said the product was sold during a religious festival near Kodambakkam Power House,” said M.S.Santhamary, project officer at Arunodaya.
Strict action sought
Activists demanded that anyone possessing or selling marijuana be booked under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, 1985. “We found that the substance came from Indore. It is legal there.The police have arrested the vendor and booked him under the Act, but are waiting for lab reports to know the marijuana content in the product,” he said.
“We expect the school authorities to keep a close watch on their students” said Andrew Sesuraj from the Tamil Nadu Child Rights Observatory (TNCRO).
Local bakeries using banned chemicals?
The government of India last month on Monday banned use of potassium bromate as a food additive following a CSE study that found its presence in bread as causing cancer. The Food Safety Standards Authority of India (FSSAI), however, has referred potassium iodate -- also claimed to be carcinogenic used as a food additive -- to a scientific panel.
Last month, the regulator had recommended to the health ministry removal of potassium bromate from the list of permissible food additives after a study by the Centre for Science and Environment (CSE).
The CSE study had found that 84 per cent of 38 commonly available brands of pre-packaged breads, including pav and buns, tested positive for potassium bromate and potassium iodate. These two food additives are banned in many countries and listed as "hazardous" for public health.
According to CSE, potassium bromate typically increases dough strength, leads to higher rising and uniform finish to baked products while potassium iodate is a flour treatment agent.
But has the remote A&N Islands has complied with the GoI ban? Perhaps not, because the concerned authorities have not yet lifted any samples to find out if the banned cancer causing chemicals are also being used by the local bakeries.
However, the Director of Health Services has belatedly assured to take all necessary steps in this regard.
Food business operators advised to file returns

All Food Business Operators who have obtained License under Food Safety & Standards Act, 2006 in Andaman & Nicobar Islands and who are involved in Manufacture and Sale of Food products like Bakery Establishments, Hotels, Restaurants, Catering/ Midday Meal supplier, Meat & Poultry product Establishments have to submit the Annual Returns in Form D-1 and also those Food Business Operators who are involved in Manufacture & Sale of Milk & Milk products have to submit Half Yearly Returns for Milk & Milk products for the period ending (a) 1st April to 30th September & (b) 1st Oct to 31st March. It is observed, that in spite, of repeated instructions from the respective District Food Safety Offices of Andaman & Nicobar Islands, the Food Business Operators are not following the instructions.
Non Submission of Returns is violation of 2.1.13 of Chapter-2 of Licensing & Registration of Food Business of Food Safety & Standards Regulations, 2011. Delay in filing return by end of 31st April of each year attracts penalty of Rs 100/- per day.
All the Food Business Operators who have not submitted their return are cautioned to submit their annual return with admissible late fee to the respective District Food Safety Office at the earliest.
The Food Safety Officers posted under the District Food Safety Offices of Andaman & Nicobar Islands will be carrying out inspections and Non- Complying Food Business Operators will be booked under relevant sections of Food Safety & Standards Act, 2006 and legal action will be initiated against them

Woman finds worms in packet of cornflakes
BENGALURU: IN yet another instance of packaged foods being contaminated, worms were found in a packet of cornflakes in the city. The woman, who observed the worms on Monday morning, posted pictures of them on the Facebook page of Kellogg’s, the company that manufactured the cornflakes in question.
According to Akanksha Mehrotra, she had purchased the particular packet of cornflakes in May from the web portal Zopnow. Though the pack was due to expire in August, she was shocked to see worms crawling in it.
Kellogg’s was quick to respond to her complaint. The company, regretting the inconvenience caused, also promised to dispatch a team to look into her complaint.
However, other people were not too happy about the incident and expressed their views on Kelloggs’ Facebook page. “If a big brand like Kellogg’s, which proclaims to provide the best quality after it charges us so much money for their products, gives sub-standard quality food, it is unacceptable,” wrote Sushmitha Chatterjee.
As per Food Safety and Standards Authority of India’s guidelines, such offences could attract imprisonment for a term which may extend to six months, and also with a fine of up to `1 lakh.
Assam Government prohibited selling and drinking of ‘Silver Drop’ packaged drinking water
Guwahati, 5 July: Upon receipt of reports from the Food Analyst to the Govt. of Assam, Referral Food Laboratory,Gaziabad and upon consideration of the same, it reveals that the sample of ‘Silver Drop’ packaged Drinking water is unsafe in terms of the provision of Section 3 (I) (zz) (iii) (x) of the Food Safety & Standard Act, 2006.
Whereas the sample of Silver Drop Packaged Drinking Water does not conform to the standard laid down under Regulation No. 2.10.8 of Food Safety and Standards.
