Shimadzu Analytical (I) Pvt. Ltd, a company known for analytical and measuring instruments,in association with FDA (Food and Drug Administration) Maharashtra, conducted a seminar on food safety here on Tuesday.
Inaugurating the seminar, Uday Wanjari, joint commissioner, FDA, Maharashtra, stated, "We encourage the use of new technologies in the sector of food safety, as it is important for our society."
The seminar, which was conducted as part of a series that started in 2012, saw experts speaking on various issues and trends in food safety. They belonged to sectors such as food processing and food safety. Apart from that, officials from FDA, National Research Centre for Grapes (NRCG) and scientists from different fields of food safety attended the event.
The seminar covered topics like regulatory aspects, analytical challenges and different methods used in the process of checking food safety. It discussed various machines and the sophisticated ideas used by laboratories to test presence of adulterants and chemicals in food.
Speaking on the occasion, K U Methekar, FSO (food safety officer), FDA, observed, "There are many unique peculiarities of FSSA, which allow to follow food safety strictly.”
Other officials from FDA, Maharashtra, explained the regulatory aspects of food safety and how it is being tackled in the country. They also looked at recent changes and developments that have been instrumental in harmonising regulations with international standards.
Further, Dr Kaushik Banerjee, director, NRCG, said, "India is a victim of getting agri products rejected due to pesticides residue presence. This is because of very weak regulations with regard to processed foods that are exported.”
He added, “As per EU data, Indian products are on the hit list of rejections. Fruits and vegetables are most rejected due to chemicals found in consignments. Achieving food safety is a shared responsibility of food analysers, government, food businessmen and consumers."
Meanwhile, Senya Imamichi, managing director, Shimadzu Analytical (I) Pvt. Ltd, said, "Shimadzu is celebrating its 140 years of global presence. Shimadzu has also launched a new machine named GCMS-TQ8040 for food testing in the Indian market.
