Mineral water unit in Madurai sealed

An officer inspecting a mineral water unit near Melur in Madurai district on Saturday.
Food Safety and Drug Administration Department officials sealed a mineral water unit in Madurai district on Saturday for the third time in the past two weeks for functioning without an ISI certification.
Authorities cracked the whip on Al-Cherry Aqua, located at Sathiyapuram near Melur, for the third time following complaints that it continued to function by breaking open the sealed unit unlawfully. According to J. Suguna, Designated Officer for Food Safety and Drug Administration, Al-Cherry Aqua was one among the 24 “herbal water” manufacturing units in Madurai. “Herbal water units did not require ISI certification previously. Around a year ago, the Green Tribunal ordered closure of all mineral water units, including herbal water units, if they did not obtain ISI certification,” Dr. Suguna said.
Following the order, a few herbal water units in the city obtained ISI certification and continued manufacturing mineral water; some supplied water in tankers and the rest closed operation, she added.
However, Al-Cherry Aqua continued its business as a mineral water manufacturing unit without ISI certification. Every time the authorities sealed the unit, the proprietors reportedly broke open the seal and functioned after midnight on the sly. “We received a complaint after we sealed the unit last week for the second time that it has started functioning again. Thereafter, we planned a surprise inspection,” she said.

Drive against erring food business operators from July 1 in Karnataka

It will focus on packaged water, milk, meat stalls and small food units
Did you know that if a shop or a manufacturer sells you a food product that lacks the prescribed standards, they can be fined up to Rs. 5 lakh?
They can also be made to cough up a penalty of up to Rs. 10 lakh if their products are adulterated or if they are misleading people through wrong advertisements. They may also attract huge penalty if their products are either made or sold under unhygienic conditions or they provide wrong information about ingredients.
These provisions have been made in the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006. All that the consumers need to do is lodge a complaint with the Food Safety Commissioner either in person or over phone.
Food Safety Commissioner S.N. Jairam told reporters here on Saturday that the government would launch a Statewide drive from July 1 against erring food business operators.
Though hotels too were controlled by this Act, the drive was not focussing on them for now as there was a case in this regard before the court, he said.He said August 4 was the last date for food business operators to register themselves and get licence. Violators could face imprisonment of six months and penalty of Rs. 5 lakh. Of the nearly 4 lakh food business operators in the State, only 1.3 lakh had registered themselves so far. There is provision for online registration as well. Consumers who have complaints can call toll-free number 180042513825 from July 1.

Registration is mandatory for food outlets from Aug 4

The food services industry will come under close scrutiny in the coming days with the State government set to enforce the Food Safety and Standards Act (FSSA) from August 4 this year.
Under the new regime, the food service industries and outlets will have to compulsorily register themselves with the Health department and obtain licence to continue with their business. Food business operators with an annual turnover of less than Rs 12 lakh will have to register themselves with the food safety wing of the Health department on payment of a fee of Rs 100.
The licence fee for operators with an annual turnover of more than Rs 12 lakh varies between Rs 2,000 and Rs 5,000. The fee can be paid at any branch of the Syndicate Bank across the State.
“We are also planning to set up a separate division for Food Safety under the Health Department by deputing more inspectors and officers.
At present ,we have 118 officials across the State, with a sanctioned strength of 400 personnel, to bring the Act into force,” said Commissioner for Food Safety, Jayaram.
He said that food service providers who do not obtain a licence under FSSA will be shut down after August 4. A drive will be launched in July to ensure that the law is followed in letter and spirit.
Hotels approach court
The commissioner said that barring hotels, which have moved the High Court, other establishments dealing with food and food products will be inspected to ensure strict compliance. Foodmarts, shopping malls, street vendors and packaged drinking water plants also come under the purview of the Act.
It has been estimated that there are around four lakh establishments in Karnataka which deal with food and food products. However, no such statistics are available on street vendors. Jayaram said that he would ask the commissioners of city municipalities/corporations across the State on getting details of street vendors to that licences could be issued to them also.
The Act will also apply to mutton and chicken stalls. Accordingly, they are prohibited from displaying the caracass of the butchered animals in front of their shops. They will have to install a cabinet for displaying meat products, by July 1. Bangalore has around 1,800 mutton and chicken stalls.

Enforcement of Food Safety Act from Aug

BANGALORE: The food service industries will have to compulsorily register themselves with the Health Department and seek licence to conduct their businesses as per the Food Safety and Standards Act (FSSA), Commissioner for Food Safety S N Jayaram said.
He said the Act will be strictly implemented August 4. Jayaram said the government will launch a drive from next month to ensure that the Act is in effect from August. “We will close down the eateries which fail to get licence from the Food Safety Wing of the Health Department,” he added.
He said plans are on to set up a separate division for food safety under the department by posting Additional Food Safety Inspectors and officers. “The meat shop owners should not hang carcasses in front of their shops, but should have a display cabinet to protect the meat from dust and unhygienic conditions inside their premises. Every shop should have the display cabinet before July 1, he said.
Jayaram said a board containing the details of officials, their addresses and telephone numbers for helping people reach them in case of adulteration or poor quality of food should be placed in front of all eateries.
A toll-free number 1800-425-13825 will become operational from July 1 for people to register their complaints.
The website of the food safety wing: www.foodsafety.kar.nic.in and the official email ID of the food safety officer in Bangalore, dobbmpsouth@gmail.com has also been set up.
Citizens may also contact (080) 23465403 with complaints, he said

Check for ISI mark on water bottle

Food Safety Commissioner S.N. Jairam on Saturday came out with a shocking disclosure that nearly 60 per cent of the packaged drinking water in Bangalore city did not have ISI certification though rules make it mandatory.
“If the packaged drinking water does not have ISI mark, then it is meant for industrial use. It is mandatory on the part of the manufacturers to declare that such a product is for industrial purpose. But they are hoodwinking consumers by selling such a product to them for human consumption,” he said, and appealed to consumers to check for ISI mark on the container or bottles of packaged water before buying them. According to the law, licences of the shops that sell packaged drinking water without ISI certification could be cancelled, he said.

Restaurant issued notice

Mussoorie, June 21
A team of the Food Safety and Standard Authority, Uttarakhand, inspected eating joints and shops in Mussoorie yesterday and issued a notice to a restaurant owner for flouting the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006.
District Food Safety and Standard Officer Rachna Lal along with other team members reached Mussoorie and inspected several hotels and restaurant on the Mall Road. She found unhygienic conditions in Kalsang, a famous Chinese restaurant near Rialto cinema, and served it a notice. The inspecting team found substandard oil and spices being sold in some shops and collected samples of food items being sold by street vendors on the Mall.
The team also inspected several hotels on the Mall Road, near Picture Palace and Landour Bazaar and directed them to maintain hygienic conditions in their kitchens to avoid any punitive action.

Family farming for safe food

A network of Krishi Vigyan Kendras (KVKs) in the State has been formed to implement the Partnership on Family Farming project to achieve food safety and nutritional security in the State. It had been conceived as part of the United Nations Organisation declaring 2014 as the International Year of Family Farming, sources said.
The Department of Agriculture would implement the project in all districts in collaboration with non-governmental and community-based forums and local bodies. The decision was taken at a meeting of all KVKs at Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Thrissur, recently.
The focus would be on enhancing production and productivity of safe-to-eat vegetables and fruits; and integration of crop, livestock, and inland fisheries into the homestead farming systems.
The plan aimed at strengthening integrated homestead models and value addition by selecting 120 ‘farming families’ in each district.
Lack of quality inputs
Inadequacy of quality inputs and market channels often curtailed most farm development projects, Kerala Agricultural University Director of Extension P.V. Balanchandran said.
“Enhancing production of safe-to-eat vegetables and fruits has to be supported by cluster-based inputs in the production and supply streams. Market outlets should benefit the community,” he added.

Motels come under the radar for unhygienic practices

TRICHY: It is always a bitter experience for long-distance road travellers, especially those travelling by buses as food and proper toilet facilities are of utmost importance. But, unmindful of all these, both government and private bus drivers tend to act according to their whims and fancies and halt the buses at motels where they are provided free food in return for bringing a bus load of passengers.
Once inside the motel, passengers are welcomed by the poor dining and toilet areas and exorbitant rates on every item sold there. Such poor conditions can be regularly seen at motels situated on NH-45 from Trichy to Chennai. Despite the drawbacks, passengers have no alternatives.
Last week, the food safety wing of Trichy conducted a raid at a motel on Chennai Bypass Road near TVS tollgate based on a complaint about inferior food quality. During the raid, the officials found discrepancies in the hygiene level of the food served there.
"There were some issues with the hygiene level. So, we warned them to rectify the problem or else face action," said Dr A Ramakrishnan, designated officer, food safety wing, Trichy.
In Trichy district alone, there are 29 motels and hotels on Chennai, Dindigul and Madurai roads. Some of them have only applied for registration and licence under Food Safety and Standard Act (FSSA). Ramakrishnan said they have advised the unregistered hotels and motels to register and provide hygienic food.
Sources said that private bus owners insist the driver and conductors to stop the vehicle at one particular motel as a they have a deal between them. It is also said that the drivers and conductors are provided quality food.
To overcome such issues, experts suggest the state government come up with eateries like 'Amma Canteens' at every 25 km along with providing other facilities. They suggested that the government can make use of its land to implement the project.
"It will be a good move if the government starts such units which can provide quality food and atmosphere. There is no need to provide food at cheaper price," said M Sekaran, president of federation of consumer and service organisations.
Consumer activist S Pushpavanam, secretary of consumer protection council, Trichy also said that if the government implements such project, it will benefit many people who undergo a lot of ordeal at the hands of the motels.

    Students hospitalised

Twelve students and two teachers of the Cotton Hills School here were hospitalised on Friday. The police said 11 girl students, one boy from the lower primary section, and two teachers were taken to a hospital after they complained of vomiting after the mid-day meals at the school. One teacher was admitted and the rest were sent home after first aid. The condition of the teacher was stated to be stable. The police said food safety officials had checked the meals and the preliminary assumption was that one of the vegetables used, yam in particular, could have triggered an allergy.

Healthy Food Habbits: Ways and means of limiting the Trans Fat intake

Presently, India is facing the dual burden of disease – while large majority of the people are suffering from chronic energy deficiency (due to poor quantity and quality of food intake); a sizeable population on the other hand is also suffering from the diet-related chronic degenerative/lifestyle related diseases. The risk factors associated with these diseases include unhealthy dietary practices, physical inactivity, overweight/obesity, smoking/drinking, drug abuse and psychological stress. Among the diet related factors, apart from the total energy intake, quantity and quality of the dietary fat play an important role.
The dietary fats may contain saturated, monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fatty acids. Further, the unsaturated fatty acids can exist either in the cis or the trans configuration depending on position of the hydrogen atoms at the double bonds. In the case of cis configuration, both the hydrogen atoms are on same side of the carbon chain, resulting in a kinked geometry which imparts greater fluidity to the oils. However, in trans configuration, the hydrogen atoms are on the opposite side, as a result the chain gets straighter with greater rigidity. Conversion of cis isomers to the corresponding trans isomers result in an increase in the melting point. From the health view point, lower the melting point, better is the oil or the fat.
Elaidic acid (9 trans C18:1) is the geometric isomer of oleic acid (9 cis C18:1). While, oleic acid has a melting point of 16.3ºC, the melting point of elaidic acid (9 trans C18:1) is 43.7ºC and that of vaccenic acid (11 trans C18:1) 44ºC. The trans fats are even more harmful than their saturated counterparts.
Trans fats or Trans fatty acids (TFAs) are the most harmful type of fats which can pose many adverse effects on our body. Major TFAs include elaidic acid (9 trans C18:1) primarily found in partially hydrogenated vegetable oils, and vaccenic acid (11 trans C18:1), found in meat/ dairy products. TFAs are also present as conjugated linoleic acid (CLA, C18:2). However, in case of polyunsaturated fatty acids (containing >2 double bonds), either one or more of the double bonds can be in trans configuration. Thus, it is possible that in the polyunsaturated fatty acids, there is coexistence of the cis and the trans double bonds.
The commonly consumed vegetable oils like soybean, sunflower, safflower, mustard, olive, rice bran, sesame are the sources of cis mono and polyunsaturated fatty acids and their saturated fatty acid content is also low. However, to obtain textural similarity to pure ghee and to improve their oxidative stability, these vegetable oils are subjected to hydrogenation. Since, complete hydrogenation would result in a waxy and excessively hard product; these oils are subjected to partial hydrogenation. Partially hydrogenated oils have a longer shelf life and are less liable to rancidity. However, this process converts some of the cis-isomers into their trans counterparts and thus leads to the production of trans fatty acid. Deodorization of fats/oils (usually carried out at high temperatures; 180ºC to 270ºC) also results in the formation of trans fatty acids.
Partially hydrogenated vegetable oils (PHVOs) have been a significant part of the human diet since ages. Many studies have reported the deleterious effects of trans fats derived from PHVO; and this hard fact has been of great relevance in formulating the health guidelines.
Indian consumer today is incognizant of the amount of TFA present in the commercially prepared fried food items and lacks understanding regarding the actual amount of TFA they are consuming during the day through these fried foods. The population in general is ignorant of the adverse effects of TFAs on health.
Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (2010) has recommended that the TFA level in PHVOs should be below 10% which needs to be brought down to 5% in 3 years. Further, it has been proposed to mandate trans fat labelling so as to reduce its intake.
Partially hydrogenated vegetable oils are the major source of trans fats in our diets. A small amount of TFA though present in dairy fat and meat products is not that harmful.
Frying process is another which leads to the production of trans fatty acids; and their formation has been closely associated with the temperature of frying the food, duration of frying, number of times the fats/oils are heated/reheated.
In 2003, World Health Organization had recommended the trans-fat intake (from industrially produced hydrogenated oils and fats) should be less than 1% of the total energy. However, the Indian dietary guidelines propose that the trans fat intake should be less than 2% of the total energy.
Suitable strategies to limit the Trans Fat intake include:
Ø Avoid using “Vanaspati/ Partially hydrogenated vegetable oils” or margarine in your kitchen. Most of our people consider vanaspati to be an economical substitute for pure ghee.
Ø Avoid consuming food items prepared in “Vanaspati/PHVOs” or margarine; ensure to check the food labels.
Ø Limit the intake of fried/baked foods, particularly the marketed fried foods.
Ø Even while frying Poori/ bhatura etc. occasionally, use oils (and not the hydrogenated fat) and do not heat the oil for very long time.
Ø Do not repeatedly heat the oil or re-use the same oil for frying. Generally, masses are not aware of the adverse health effects of TFA and that reheating of fats/ oils results in the formation of TFA.
Further, after the frying process, cool the left-over fats/oils, strain out the suspended food particles and store the fat/oil in refrigerator/cool place and use it in the preparation of dry vegetables/curries and pulav etc.
Ø Avoid using ready to use/instant mixes for preparing foods as they have a greater chance of containing the Trans fats.
Ø Check the Nutrition Facts label on packaged food items for their TFA content, if indicated.
Ø Always check the ingredient list on packaged foods for the words like “shortening”, “partially hydrogenated vegetable oil” or “hydrogenated vegetable oil”, since, these contain trans fats.
Ø Avoid processed foods like cookies, chips, cakes and patties. Also, avoid consuming commercial fried foods and mithais esp if prepared inVanaspati/PHVOs; and limit their quantity as well as frequency of intake.
Ø While eating out/ ordering food from outside, try to find out the oil being used in food preparation. If possible, request for reducing the amount of oil in the food preparation. A better option is to skip the deep-fried foods while eating out.
Ø For bakery items like biscuits and cake, red palm oil having a semi-solid texture can be blended with other edible oils, in 1:1/ 1:2 blends and used. It will also enhance the Beta-carotene/vitamin A content of the food item. Due to the semi-solid texture, RPO will help in bringing about the shortening effect in baked items without adding to their TFA content.
Implications for policy, practice and education: The authorities need to check the use of vanaspati and margarine as well as control an excessive use of the reheated fats/ oils. The halwais should be advised not to use oils over and over again for frying but to consume the used oils in the preparation of vegetables, curries, dough making, pulav etc. Nutrition education needs to be imparted to the halwais regarding TFA and their adverse health effects as well as they should be trained on correct frying practices.
The government should consider specifying achievable lower limits for TFA and SFA content of vegetable oils and the processed/fried foods. Nutrition labels on processed foods should indicate the TFA and SFA contents separately along with the optimal recommended ranges. The restaurants should avoid the use of ‘partially hydrogenated oils’ and if otherwise, its use should be disclosed.
Further, the consumers should be made aware of the health hazards associated with TFA intake. In oil processing, the food industry should implement newer technologies so as to produce zero trans fat containing products with desired functional properties. A multi-sectoral and proactive approach is required to successfully remove/reduce industrially produced TFAs from the food supply chain. Targeted message campaigns discouraging the intake of trans-fats containing foods can be of great help.
While some developing countries have laid down norms for TFA content of food, India needs strict regulations regarding the TFA content of fats/ oils as well as that of the commercially prepared food items. Therefore, at present the responsibility lies with the consumers to safeguard their interest. Therefore, steps need to be taken for curbing the trans fat intake through foods prepared both at industrial as well as household level.
“Beware of the trans fats in your diet, their high intake increases the risk of degenerative/lifestyle diseases. Say no to the hydrogenated fats/oils and the products prepared in hydrogenated fats/oils. Further, reduce the intake/frequency of fried foods, particularly the commercially prepared ones”.

Lizard in noon meal; 166 fall ill

A total of 166 students of Melkaaranai Government High School near here who took mid-day meal served in the school on Wednesday were admitted to the Mundiyambakkam government medical college hospital after they complained of giddiness and stomach pain.
As news spread, parents rushed to the school and took up the matter with the headmaster, Ananthanarayanan.
Students were taken to the hospital in ambulances. Sighting of a lizard in the meal is said to have caused them nausea.
On information, Collector V. Sampath rushed District Revenue Officer R. Brindadevi and Deputy Director (Health) R. Meera to arrange for treatment.

Hotel owners, distributors, traders exempted from filing annual returns

PUNE: Food traders, restaurants and distributors are now permanently exempted from filingannual returns by the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI). The move has been facilitated by a new amendment in the Food Safety and Standards Act 2006, which came into effect on June 10.
The exemption applies to food traders, retailers, caterers, hoteliers, owners of restaurants, mess, fast food joints, grocery shops besides transporters.
"Earlier, the regulatory body had issued a letter granting temporary exemption to traders, restaurants and distributors. With the new amendment, the exemption is permanent. Now, only food manufacturers, packers, re-packers, labellers and re-labellers and importers will have to file annual returns. They will be fined Rs 100 per day for failing to do so," said Shashikant Kekare, joint commissioner (food), FDA.
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) had earlier directed all foodbusiness licencees with an annual turnover of Rs 12 lakh and above to submit their annual returns by May 31, failing which, a fine of Rs 100 per day was to be levied.
Dilip Sangat, assistant commissioner (food), FDA said, "It is easy for food manufacturers, packers, re-packers, labellers and re-labellers and importers to keep a record of the stock and transactions made. But the same is difficult for owners of grocery shops and restaurants and other food distributors."
A member of the Poona Merchants Chamber, said, "Traders have been facing a lot of problems ever since the new Food Safety and Standards Act came into force in August 2011. One of issues is filing annual returns. Former Union agriculture minister Sharad Pawar had held a meeting with FSSAI officials on March 7 last year following which food regulators decided to make certain amendments to resolve the issue. The present amendment is a fall out of our long-drawn struggle."
For the first time food business operators were asked to submit annual returns of their transactions made till March-end when the new Act came into force in August 2011. The Act aims at bringing the food industry under one umbrella by scrapping all old licences. The food industry needs to be regulated in order to ensure food safety.
There are over 9,000 licensed food business operators in the city who have an annual turnover of Rs 12 lakh and above. They include food manufacturers, distributors, wholesalers, retailers, recyclers, processors, transporters, restaurants, hotels and catering business operators.
As per the Food Safety and Standards Act and Regulations 2011 (licensing and registration), the business operators have to submit the returns in the particular format (form D-1). Only owners of milk businesses have been asked to submit the returns in half yearly format as given in form D-2.
"Another amendment made in the Act exempts food business operators from paying fine for delay in renewal of registration. Only licenced food business operators will have to submit a fine of Rs 100 per day for delay in seeking renewal of licence," Sangat said.
    The Changes
    1. The amendments to the Food Safety and Standards Act 2006, came into effect on June 10
    2. Food traders, retailers, caterers, hotels, restaurants, mess owners, fast food joints, transporters, distributors and grocery shop owners have been permanently exempted from filing annual returns
    3. Food manufacturers, packers, re-packers, labellers, re-labellers and importers have to submit annual returns

Cus - Cocoa Beans were found contaminated with fungal growth

Cus - Cocoa Beans were found contaminated with fungal growth – since Cocoa Beans is a 'food product' unless it is cleared by Food Safety & Standards Authority same cannot be released - Petition dismissed: High Court

ERNAKULAM, June 19, 2014 : THE petitioner imported 132 bags of fermented and dried Coco Beans and certain other items under Bill of Entry. The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI), on inspection, found that Coco beans were contaminated with fungal growth. As per the prescribed standards, the materials should be free from fungus. According to the petitioner, after necessary fumigation, the fungal growth would be wiped off and there is no reason for detaining the goods.
The goods were not permitted to be released to the petitioner by the Commissioner of Customs, Cochin and it was proposed to either confiscate or destroy the same or to grantnecessary permission to re-export the materials, if it is permissible, as per the procedure prescribed.
The Petitioner has filed a WP before the Kerala High Court seeking a direction to the Commissioner of Customs to order release of the goods.
In the Counter affidavit filed, the Customs authorities elaborated the measures that are to be taken while importing food products. It is inter alia stated that import of all edible/food products including tea, domestic sale and manufacture of which are governed by Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006 and Rules thereunder, shall also be subject to the conditions laid down in the aforesaid Act and Rules framed thereunder and the import of all these products will have to comply with the quality and packaging requirements as laid down in the Act. As it is indicated that Cocoa Beans comes under `food product', coming within the schedule to the said Act, unless it is cleared by the FSSAI Department, it may not be possible for the petitioner to take release of the goods.
The Petitioner produced a certificate dated 13/05/2014 issued by the Director of Plant Protection, QuarantineStorage Department, Government of India indicating that the consignment has 'passed'.
The High Court observed that no specific details are mentioned in said certificate and at any rate, if the Customs wanted to clear the goods aforesaid, necessary permission from the FSSAI is required, which is a mandatory provision. It was also noted that the certificate would not render any assistance to the petitioner.
Holding that, in the factual circumstances, there is no reason to permit release of the aforesaid goods, the Writ petition was dismissed.
However, the petitioner was granted liberty to approach the respondent authority seeking re-export, if it is permissible, as per the procedure prescribed.

India-born scientist named winner of 2014 World Food Prize

Washington: India-born plant scientist Sanjaya Rajaram has been named the winner of the USD 250,000 World Food Prize for his contribution in increasing global wheat production by more than 200 million tonnes in the years following the Green Revolution.
Rajaram's breakthrough achievement in successfully cross-breeding winter and spring wheat varieties, which were distinct gene pools and had been isolated from one another for hundreds of years, led to him developing plants that have higher yields and a broad genetic base.
More than 480 high-yielding wheat varieties bred by Rajaram have been released in 51 countries on six continents and have been widely adopted by small- and large-scale farmers alike. "Dr Rajaram's work serves as an inspiration to us all to do more, whether in the private or public sector," said Secretary of State, John Kerry, at an event where he delivered the keynote address.
"When you do the math, when our planet needs to support two billion more people in the next three decades, it's not hard to figure out: This is the time for a second green revolution," Kerry said.
Rajaram followed Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Norman E Borlaug at the International Maize and Wheat Improvement Center, CIMMYT, leading its Wheat Program from 1976 to 2001. The World Food Prize Foundation President and the former US Ambassador to Cambodia, Kenneth M Quinn, said the 2014 World Food Prize Laureate is an individual who worked closely with Dr Borlaug in Mexico and who then carried forward and extended his work, breaking new ground with his own achievements.
"We are grateful for the hundreds of new species of wheat Dr Rajaram developed, which deliver 200 million more tonnes of grain to global markets each year and feed millions across the world," Kerry added. The top diplomat also talked about Feed the Future, a presidential global hunger and food security initiative, through which the US is establishing a foundation for lasting progress against global hunger.
"Feed the Future supports a research agenda to harness scientific innovation and technology in agriculture," he said. The World Food Prize was established in 1986 by Borlaug in order to focus the world's attention on hunger and on those whose work has significantly helped efforts to end it. This year marks the 28th anniversary of the prize, which recognises individuals who have advanced human development by improving the quality, quantity or availability of food in the world.
