Adulterated jaggery seized

The officials of the Food Safety Department conducted surprise check in the jaggery market in the city on Thursday and seized adulterated items.
Jaggery auction is conducted in the market near Moolappilayar Temple every Monday and Thursday.
When the auction was in progress on Thursday morning, a team of officials, led by T. Anuradha, District Designated Officer, Food Safety Department, conducted surprise check.
The team inspected the jaggery being auctioned, and noticed that some of the stock was adulterated.
The manufacturers had mixed white sugar and some chemicals for getting the needed colour while producing the jaggery, in violation of Food Safety Act.
The officials seized 8.5 tonnes of adulterated jaggery and the samples were sent to the Food Testing Laboratory.
Dr. Anuradha addressing the producers and traders present at the auction centre told them to ensure that non-adulterated jaggery alone is brought for auctioning. The jaggery manufacturers should not involved in manufacturing adulterated items that are harmful for consumption, she said.
Dr. Anuradha said that complaints were received by the Food Safety Commissioner on the production of adulterated jaggery in the district, based on which the surprise inspection was conducted at the auction centre and the godown. The jaggery should be produced using only the sugarcane juice. But, some of the manufactures add white sugar.
