Minister for Food
Processing Smt. Harsimrat Kaur Badal met the Chairperson of the Food
Safety Standards Authority of India Shri Chandramouli here last evening
and discussed with him the problems being faced by the food processing
industries in obtaining product approvals. The Minister raised the issue
of long delays being caused by FSSAI in giving product approvals.
The Minister also directed officials of the Food Processing Industries
Ministry to devise new schemes to provide last mile delivery to farmers,
which include ‘Farm to Shelf’ schemes like setting up mobile processing
vans which could reach out to farmers, and setting up small food
processing units providing business incubation, training and a
processing centre at village level so that farmers’ produce is processed
and reach markets. The Minister asked the industry, CII and FICCI, and
financial organizations to contribute in this revolutionary initiative
by becoming part of the drive to reach food processing out to the
village level.
Smt Badal has met industry chambers both CII and FICCI on the issue of
delays in granting product approvals and sought their suggestions.
The Minister also met Chairman of YES Bank Mr. Rana Kapoor, a pioneering
bank having immense practical know-how on food processing industries
lending and farmers.
The FPI Minister has categorically expressed her priorities, viz.
1. To curb food inflation by boosting food processing
2. To mitigate post harvest fruit and vegetable losses
3. To drive and accelerate food processing industries growth
4. To de-regulate and simplify governmental systems, processes and
clearances that delay food processing projects, causing huge losses to
the companies putting up projects
5. To review the role of FSSAI regarding long delays in clearing product
approvals.
