Following a raid by Narcotics Affairs and Borders (NAB), Food Safety and Enforcement Wing, Imphal East, Monday, a storeshouse at Mantripukhri area was seized for violating food safety norms in storing and adulteration of food products.
Acting on an information of adulteration of mustard oil being carried out in astorehouse of M/S Traders at Mantripukhri area in Imphal East, a teamof NAB led by SI Jiten and SI Shamu under the aegis of NAB OC RK Bikramjit raided the storehouse at around 11.30 am on Monday. During the raid, they found persons mixing various brands of mustard oil like Tagore, Neeraj, Shivam, Ruchi and packing it in containers of reputed brands. Apart from these, they were also found collecting spilled oil and mixing them in the containers.
The team rounded up the workers in the storehouse and found out that the storehouse belongs to one MulchandPawar from Rajasthan who is presently staying at ThangalKeithel. Mukesh Sharma, Supervisor of the storehouse reportedly looked after the adulteration exercise carried out in the storeroom. Besides, the team also learnt that
…the illegal activityhas been going on since the past two years. After mixing the oil, they sell the same at various places of the state in wholesale.
Later, the NAB team informed Food Safety and Standard Enforcement Wing, Imphal East. In Charge of the wing, Y Satyajit and ThSunilkumar then collected samples of different brands of mustard oil from the storehouse andseized the storehouse. The team further checked another room of the storehouse and found betel nuts, rice, corns, glycerine and vehicle tyresviolating food safety norms. The team found hints of mixing bad and good betel nuts for selling in wholesale.
Speaking to reporters regarding the raid, Y Satyajit said that any person, who is found indulging in food adulteration and storing of food products violating the food safety norms, is liable to fined up to Rs 5 lakh and a prison term of 5 years. The seized mustard oils isworth Rs 10 lakh in the market value while other food products seized are worth Rs 15 lakh. The wing would
register acase against the owner of the storehouse under the Food Safety Standard Act 2006 and Rules and Regulation 2011, Satyajt added. He also appealed to the people to inform the wing if they find any such food adulteration activities or improper storage of foods.
Later, the same team also seized the shop of the same agency in ThangalKeithel.
