Sleuths of the Local Crime Branch (LCB) unit in the Thane (rural) police claimed to have unearthed a gutkha packaging unit that was operating from a tenement in the Dhaniv Baug area of Nallasopara (E). While three people including the kingpin of the racket have been arrested, the police has seized a huge consignment of gutkha, empty sachets and a packing machine. Following a specific tip-off, a joint team headed by Food and Drug Administration (FDA), officer V.V. Vedpathak and LCB chief Kishore Khairnar, raided a tenement in Abdul Chawl of Jadhav Nagar on Wednesday and caught the accused red-handed while packing guthka in sachets of various brands using a packaging machine. The accused have been identified as Tanzim Ahmed Khan (30), Abdul Khan (20) and Govind Ramlal Chaurasiya (27). A case under sections 272, 273, 179, 188, 328, 420 and 34 of the Indian Penal Code and under the relevant sections of the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, has been registered against the trio who have been remanded to police custody till June 18. Further investigations are on.
