LUCKNOW: The Lucknow bench of the Allahabad high court has sought reply from the Centre and state government on why the provisions of Food Safety Standards Act, 2006, and Food Safety and Standards Rules, 2011, are not being implemented in letter and spirit. The court gave the governments six weeks to file reply.
A division bench of the high court passed the above order on a PIL filed by Virendra Kumar Yadav. Petitioner's lawyer BrijeshKumar Singh said though the Act came into effect in the state on August 5, 2011, the machinery and the set up mentioned under it are yet to be implemented.
The Act lays down the appointment of food safety commissioners, deputy and assistant commissioner food safety, 75 full-time designated officers, 75 chief food safety officers and 662 food safety officers in the state to implement the provisions, but the posts are lying vacant. The post of chief safety commissioner has been lying vacant for the last six months, counsel said.
