Warning against sellers of murky drinking water

Food Safety Commissioner has warned of stern action against those supplying polluted drinking water. .

The direction follows findings that the water being distributed in tankers and other vehicles was polluted.

Tankers attached to lorries distributing drinking water will be allowed to operate only after securing Food Business Operator (FBO) licence as per the Food Safety and Standards Regulations. FBO numbers should be exhibited on vehicles.

If the owner had deployed more than one vehicle, then the licence should bear the registration numbers of those vehicles. The regulation is applicable to those operating hired vehicles as well.

The words drinking water should be inscribed in a very legible manner on the vehicles both in English and Malayalam.

If the water being carried is not for drinking, then the purpose for it is being used should also be specifically mentioned. Legal action will be taken against those violating this direction.

The inside of tankers being used for transporting water should have the requisite coating. All sources of water except that of Kerala Water Authority should also have FBO licenses.

Water from these sources should be tested at government labs or National Accreditation Board for Testing and Calibration Laboratories once in six months for quality.
