ALAPPUZHA: Special squads have been formed by the district administration to carry out inspections on houseboats to ensure the quality of food and water supplied to tourists.
District collector N Padamkumar said a special meeting of houseboat operators of Alappuzha was convened and instructions were given to take appropriate steps to ensure quality and safety of food items, especially during rainy season.
District Tourism Promotion Council (DTPC) secretary C Pradeep said water-borne diseases are more likely to spread during monsoon. "The squads comprise food inspectors and officials from health, revenue and police departments. Legal action will be taken against houseboat operators if stale or contaminated food/drinks are found during inspections,' said Pradeep.
The houseboat operators were instructed to provide boiled drinking water. They were also directed not to use fish and meat stored in refrigerators for more than 5 days.
Breakfast provided on most houseboats comprise tapioca and fish curry, along with welcome drinks. Lunch comprises local dishes like pearl spot fry, chicken curry, pickel, sambar, pappadam, thoran and avial along with rice. Tea and snacks, usually banana fry, are provided in the evening. "Chappathi or rich with pearl spot fry, chicken or vegetable curry is usually served for supper. If the guests demand special food like biriyani in advance, we will make arrangements for it," said Aneesh Kumar, an employee of a houseboat.
