Dehradun, August 7
After the Central Government raised the time period for acquiring food licences under the Food Safety Act to August 2015 for all those who are in the food business operators, there are already concerns that it may not be implemented in its present state.
The lack of seriousness among state governments to strengthen the department by hiring manpower and setting up infrastructure had already slowed down the implementation of the Act.
Now with the BJP government extending the time period for acquiring food licences under the Act for food operators to six months, there are concerns that the Act may even undergo radical changes. “The new government may do away with harsher penalties as envisaged in the Act to appeal to its own vote bank, but it would only defeat the purpose of the Act,” said a senior official.
