A private sago manufacturing unit at Minnampalli that was found to be using poisonous chemicals for bleaching and whitening was sealed by the officials of the food safety wing here on Wednesday.
A team led by T. Anuradha, District Designated Officer, Tamil Nadu Food Safety and Drug Administration Department, inspected the unit.
They found the chemicals being used.
Officials said that samples were already taken from the unit in April and laboratory report confirmed the product as sub-standard. An appeal time was given for the manufacturer and later charge sheet was also filed before the adjudicating officer-cum-District Revenue Officer.
Since the unit was found to be continuously involving in manufacturing products with poisonous chemicals, officials sealed the unit.
This is the third unit to be sealed in the district in two months.
