MADURAI: The industrial community in Madurai is keeping its fingers crossed ahead of the maiden budget of the Narendra Modi government, thanks to a host of promises given by BJP in its election manifesto.
Trade and business veterans in the city hope that the budget would give a fillip to the national economy and spur overall growth. But when it comes to announcements on infrastructure development for Tamil Nadu, particularly the southern districts, the industrial community is worried that there should not be a repeat of the Union railway budget presented on July 8, which lacked new projects or fund allocation for the state.
"We expect the government to provide a roadmap for implementation of the Food Safety and Standards Act. There should be a concrete announcement on implementation of the Act," said N Jegatheesan, president of Tamil Nadu Chamber of Commerce and Industry. "Direct taxation should be introduced to replace a host of indirect taxes. Excise duty, central sales tax, VAT and service tax should also be replaced by Goods and Services Tax. It would be a milestone," Jegatheesan said.
