Food safety surveillance committees will soon be set up with the Chief Secretary as chairman at the State-level and the District Collector at the district-level, Health Minister V. S. Sivakumar has said.
A comprehensive action plan would be implemented in the State to make available fruits that had not been contaminated by chemicals, used for artificial ripening.
Mr. Sivakumar said this after holding a meeting of representatives of wholesale fruit dealers and food safety officials here on Friday. The meeting was called following widespread complaints that most fruits available in the State’s markets were being ripened using chemicals. A food safety whistleblower system will be introduced.
