KOCHI: The food safety department on Monday issued notices to 15 roadside eateries in the city for violating various rules and operating in unhygienic conditions. The notices were issued during a special drive conducted in the city as part of the statewide drive by the district food safety officials following a direction from the food safety commissioner, Biju Prabhakar.
The drive focused on eateries at Ernakulam south and High Court Junction, among others. Violations revealed during the drive include keeping food uncovered, operating without valid licences from the food safety department, use of colours, unhygienic surroundings and lack of personal hygiene. According to the food safety department, the commissioner had received several complaints about roadside eateries recently. Though no written complaints were received from Kochi, officials admitted that they were informed by public about violations by roadside eateries over the phone. The drive was conducted from 5pm to 8pm.
"No fines were imposed on eateries as this was the first stage of the drive. But we will levy fines if they are found violating the law again," said V N Sasikumar, food safety inspector. He added that the drive would continue in the coming days also. The food safety department had recently issued notices to seven model 'thattukdas', which were introduced as part of a Kochi corporation project to ensure hygiene at eateries. "They were given certain guidelines for operating, including hygiene, use of potable water for cooking. But many were found violating those norms," said Sasikumar.
