Registration certificates, licences given to 2,622 State-run units
Food Safety Officers have registered 13,682 establishments in the district so far.
Out of the 15,259 food business establishments, including government units, 13,682 units were registered under the Food Safety Standards Act (FSSA), M. Jagadis Chandrabose, District Designated Officer, FSSA, said here on Monday. Totally, 12,917 registration certificates were given to operators with an annual turnover of less than Rs.12 lakh and licences were given to 771 operators with an annual turnover of more than Rs.12 lakh.
Among the 3,963 State-run food business operators, registration certificates and licences had been given to 2,622 units so far.
The government units included fair price shops, Tamil Nadu Civil Supplies Corporation facilities, IMFL godowns, government hostels and noon meal centres, he said.
Dr. Chandrabose said the Food Safety Officers inspected the noon meal centres and the cooks were asked to maintain hygiene.
At Vilathikulam, the officers collected sample of a misbranded gutkha with ‘zero percent tobacco and nicotine’ printed on its pouch and forwarded it to a laboratory for testing and it was declared unfit for consumption. The officers referred the case to District Revenue Officer R. Muthu to levy penalty on the seller.
Banned gutkha and pan masala containing nicotine were being seized at regular intervals during surprise raids in district. Over 10 lakh pouches of the banned items had been seized and destroyed so far. Many shopkeepers were stashing the banned gutkha and pan masala at isolated locations.
Such acts of violations were largely reported in Kovilpatti and Vilathikulam, the officer said.
Investigations revealed that gutkha was transported from Madurai and being concealed in isolated godowns at Nalli, a place bordering Tuticorin and Virudhunagar districts.
Adulterated tea leaves were mostly sold in shops at Kovilpatti, Dr. Chandrabose added.
