To create awareness among the people about the ill-affects of tobacco and to disseminate information about its ban in the district, more than 300 school students took out a rally here on Thursday.
It was organised by the Tamil Nadu Food Safety and Drug Administration Department. District Collector K. Maharabushanam flagged off the rally at Collectorate.
Students held placards that explained the benefits of quitting tobacco and the ill-effects of passive smoking.
The district administration has recently banned the manufacturing, storing, and selling of gutkha, panmasala, and other food products containing tobacco or nicotine as ingredient. A District Level Monitoring Committee under the chairmanship of the District Collector was formed for implementing the ban.
Mr. Maharabushanam told reporters here that traders were already instructed not to sell the banned items. “They were given time till June 22 to comply with the law. Thereafter action will be taken,” he added.
District Designated Officer T. Anuradha; Chief Educational Officer R. Eswaran; members from NGOs and students participated. If people came across shops selling the banned items, they can contact 94435-20332 or 0427-2450332.
