Ludhiana, June 20
Roadside vendors in the city are violating the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, with impunity.
Most of the vendors selling golgappas do not wear gloves. They do don't maintain hygiene and cleanliness.
Flies and mosquitoes are seen hovering around the food. Rakesh Kumar, a street food vendor at Model Town, said officials of the health department visited the area at whims.
"All this is happening right under the nose of the health department and the district administration," said Sadhna, a Dugri resident.
"The government should take a serious note of the hygiene at such vends as it poses a threat to the health of the residents," he said.
District health officer Dr Avinash Kumar said the department was doing its best. "Efforts are on to maintain the quality. The department collects food samples on a regular basis," he said.
