The State Human Rights Commission has directed the Commissioner of Food Safety to examine the demand that a bill is given for every food purchase a consumer makes.
A petition filed before the SHRC by an advocate based in the city said that bill was either not given or collected from the consumer and kept on the counter in most hotels after a meal. As bills were not issued, a consumer ordering food as a take-home parcel also found it difficult to raise an issue, in case there was some confusion. The complainant pointed out his personal experience when he was given the wrong food as parcel and how he could not take up the issue as he had no proof of the order that he had given. Consumers also would not be able to press a complaint with food safety authorities when bills were not issued for food, the petitioner contended.
