Imphal, November 22 2015: Though it is necessary to hold license of Food Safety and Standard Authority of India (FSSAI) before opening any temporary food stalls at food melas, exhibition and festivals, Tourism Department of Manipur failed to inform the same to food business operators who are participating in the ongoing Sangai Festival 2015 .
Sources said that Food Safety Officer of Imphal East Pushpa Rai on October 23 last had written to the Tourism Department Director and requested to notify the food business operators to apply for FSSAI licenses from the authorities.
However, the Tourism Department failed to inform the same to the food business operators and as a result, food stalls were opened at the ongoing Sangai Festival without any FSSAI license on the first day.
FSSAI licenses issued late after tourism dept fails to inform food stall owners
Like previous years, food stalls opened at the Sangai Festival were examined by Food Security Officers on Sunday.
Most of the food stalls were found opened without any FSSAI license during the inspection.
In previous Sangai Festivals, food stalls opened at the festival were minutely examined by the Food Safety Officers and checked the quality of foods if they were fit for consumption.
Food business operators were also made to apply for FSSAI licenses prior to the opening of their stalls.
A team of Food Security Officers led by Imphal East Food Security Officer Th Sunilkumar, Imphal West Food Security Officer Yumnam Sheityajit and Ukhrul Food Security Officer Khogendro Ningthoukhongjam inspected the Sangai Festival food stalls on Sunday.
The team examined the stalls and checked whether the foods available were served on the visitors within the permissible limits or not.
During the visit, one food stall was found mixing "non-permitted colour additives" in the food served.
Kitchens of over ten food stalls found unhygienic.
The team also warned the stalls to keep their kitchens in hygienic condition by Monday.
Meanwhile, most of the lanes between the stalls at the festival are covered with carpets to avoid dusts.
However, no such carpets are seen along the lanes leading to these food stalls.
