Food safety – Special drive conducted

In a special drive carried out by the Food Safety Officers of District Food Safety Office, under the commissionerate of Food Safety between 1st July 2015 to 11th July 2015, 65 nos. of Food Business Operators conducting petty food business and restaurants were inspected for hygienic and sanitary condition of the food premises. Accordingly, under section 69 of Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, 12 food business operators were compounded and a penalty of Rs. 1,000/- each, amounting to Rs. 12,000/- were collected as fine for violation of Sec.56 of FSS Act, 2006. Nine food business operators’ premises are under the process of compounding and one food business operator premises has been issued improvement notice. Meanwhile, on 7th July 2015, three food business operators were adjudicated by the Adjudication officer under sec. 23 and sec. 26(2) (ii) (v) and a penalty of Rs. 25,000/-, Rs 15,000/- and Rs. 25,000/- amounting to Rs. 65,000/- was collected as fine.

The Commissioner Food Safety has further cautioned the food business operators of South Andaman that the special drive carried out by the Food Safety Officers attached to the District Food Safety Office, South Andaman will continue and in the next phase, the food business operators carrying the trade of Bakery business will be inspected.
