40 tonnes of adulterated jaggery seized

Intensifying their drive against adulterated food items, officials of the Tamil Nadu Food Safety and Drug Administration Department conducted surprise checks in vehicles carrying jaggery to the market and found it to be of poor quality.

A team, led by District Food Safety Officer T. Anuradha, along with other officers, intercepted 35 vehicles carrying about 50 tonnes of jaggery to the market in the city.
They found 40 tonnes of jaggery that was manufactured using white sugar in 33 vehicles. Using white sugar is against the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006.
The drivers were asked about the details of the manufacturers as the gunny bags contained no details.
Based on the laboratory reports, action would be taken against the manufacturers, the officials said.
About 10 tonnes of jaggery that was manufactured without using sugar and banned chemicals were auctioned in the market.
Later, the manufacturers met Ms. Anuradha and submitted a written undertaking that they would not involve in such acts.
The officials said that last week 8.5 tonnes of adulterated jaggery was seized and manufacturers agreed not to continue the act.
However, they continued to produce adulterated jaggery.
Traders were also asked not to accept adulterated jaggery for auction.
The officials said that adulterated jaggery when mixed with water would dissolve quickly while pure jaggery would take time to dissolve.
