The Department of Food Safety has directed food business operators (FBO) who have not yet enrolled under the ‘licensing and registration system’ to do so before February 4.
In a press note, Dr. V. Candavelou, Food Safety Commissioner, said the process of applying for food license or registration can be done online atwww.fssai.gov, and FBOs can approach the department at Indira Nagar, Gorimedu for assistance or guidance.
Pointing out that conduct of food business without license or registration was a punishable offence, the Commissioner appealed to FBOs who remained out of the regulatory loop to comply immediately.
Though the Food Safety Department has been issuing food license and registration certificates through online process since January, 2014, it has been found that very few FBOs have enrolled themselves under the Licensing and Registration mechanism.
A system is also in place for FBOs due to renew their food license to get an alert message in their e-mail as well as an SMS in their registered mobile number 60 days prior to expiry date. FBOs who fail to renew license within 30 days of license expiry would be levied a penalty of Rs. 100 per day from the 31st day to the 60th day, the press note said. Dr. Candavelou pointed out that under the understanding reached with all municipalities and commune panchayats,it has been made compulsory for FBOs to obtain food licence and certificates. “Hence, in the absence of food license or registration, FBOs are reminded that trade license cannot be issued or renews by the municipalities or commune panchayats concerned.”
