2,303 kg worth about Rs. 13.19 lakh found stocked in godown

Officials attached to the Department of Food Safety seized Rs. 13.19 lakh-worth tobacco products from a godown near here on Thursday.
On receiving information about the stocking of huge quantity of banned tobacco products in a godown near Nainarkulam in Tirunelveli Town, the police raided the spot on Tuesday and confirmed the stockpiling of the contraband goods. Subsequently, the police sealed the godown.
In the presence of the Food Safety Department’s higher officials, the godown was opened on Thursday and the officials found 2,303 kg of banned tobacco products, worth about Rs. 13.19 lakh, stocked there.
Investigations revealed that the owner of the godown, one Ramesh, was supplying the banned products to the retail shops in Tirunelveli, Tuticorin and Kanyakumari districts.
Sample sent for analysis
“After the sample was sent for analysis, the remaining quantity of the seized tobacco product has been kept in a sealed room in the Food Safety Office. Based on the analysis report, thecase will be taken to the next level,” said A. R. Sankaralingam, Food Safety Inspector.
