Gearing up to prevent food adulteration during this festive season, the UT Administration has begun an intensive checking drive in the Union Territory of Chandigarh.
A team of the UT Food Safety & Standards Authority, UT Health Department has been constituted to conduct preventive checks in the city.During Thursday’s inspection across the city, about 200 kgs of Matthi, Cream Rolls, Balu Shahi, Cream, Vanaspati Ghee and Maida which were kept exposed to dust and flies and were unfit for human consumption were destroyed under Epidemic Diseases Act in the city.
A spokesperson of the UT Administration said that a joint team comprising food safety officers Bharat Kanojia and Surinder Pal Singh conducted a raid on October 9 under the supervision of Dr KS Rana, designated officer in view of the ongoing festive season to check the purity of sweets and khoya products in Chandigarh.
The team inspected the areas of Sector 14, Manimajra, Pipliwala Town, Gobindpura, Indira Colony, Shanti Nagar and the area around the Railway Phatak, said the spokesperson.After inspection, the team took four samples of Khoya, Besan Laddoo, Gulab Jamun and Rasgulla Sweets.
The spokesperson said that the Administration has already issued warning to shopkeepers and vendors to refrain from activities like food adulteration. If any shopkeeper or vendor is found selling adulterated food, strict action will be taken against them under Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006 and under Section 2 of the epidemic diseases Act 1897 (Central Act No.III of 1897).
The UT Administration has also directed all food business operators to maintain proper hygiene of their premises while preparing and selling of sweet meals.
