About Rs.50,000 worth of banned tobacco products such as gutka and paan were seized from various shops in and around the Chathram Bus Stand in the city by Food Safety officials here on Tuesday.
The checks covered a large number of petty shops, sweat meat stalls and juice shops around the bus stand.
About 15 Food Safety officers led by A.Ramakrishnan, Designated Officer, TN Food Safety and Drug Administration (Food Wing),Tiruchi, conducted the checks.
The officials also seized some quantity of soft drinks and butter milk sachets which had no proper labelling at some of the shops.
About 25 kg of mangoes, which were being ripened using calcium carbide stones, by a roadside vendor was also seized during the raid.
The officials also collected samples of juices and sweat meats to be sent for analysis to check for use of colouring agents.
The officials said that the checks could continue in the coming days across the city.
