Police along with Food Safety and Standards Authority of India officials lifting chewable tobacco samples from a warehouse in the city on Saturday.
Variety Hall Road Police along with officials from the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India on Saturday seized chewable tobacco products from a warehouse on Theosophical Club Lane, off Lingappa Chetty Street.
According to Inspector of Police C. Chandraseelan, following a tip off when a police team went to the spot, it found tobacco products stored in gunny bags.
It then informed the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India officials, who arrived at the spot to lift samples.
The officials found that there were around five lakh sachets of chewable tobacco packed in the name of a popular brand. Ashok Kumar, who had taken on hire the warehouse, had bought the tobacco product from New Delhi. The consignment had arrived at the warehouse a little more than a week ago.

The tobacco was worth around Rs. 5 lakh, the police officer said and added that the FSSAI officials had lifted samples to check if the tobacco product contained nicotine.
Sources in the FSSAI said that if the lab report confirmed the presence of nicotine, the officials would destroy the sachets at the Coimbatore Corporation’s dump yard in Vellalore.
