Here's the truth behind artificial Chinese eggs 'sold' in Kerala

The eggs that were said to be artificial and Chinese have been proven as real, but rotten.
Artificial Chinese eggs story turns out to be fake
For a week, people in Kerala have been hearing about the widespread sale of artificial Chinese eggs in the state. Many also came forward with samples that looked like fake eggs. These eggs are said to have a hard shell, yolk, and a plastic-like texture. The testimonials by many people had even created panic among the public.
How believable are these Chinese eggs stories?
According to a lab test conducted by Commissionerate of Food Safety at the Meat and Science Technology Lab at Kerala Veterinary College and Research Institute in Thrissur, the artificial egg story is fake.
As per the report handed over to the Food Safety Commissioner, the samples tested are said to be real eggs, but rotten. It claims that the texture of eggs changes after being exposed to different temperatures. Before sending it to different stores, the eggs are kept in freezers for many days. However, while they are being transported to different places, the temperature varies resulting in its texture change.
Meanwhile, Dr George T Oommen, director of Centre for Advanced Studies in Poultry Science, assures that there aren't any techniques to make perfect eggs artificially as of now and are not being imported from China. The authorities have also decided to conduct a detailed test by collecting samples from different parts of the state.
Artificial Chinese eggs story turns out to be fake
Muralee Thummarukudy about Chinese eggs
In a detailed Facebook post, Muralee Thummarukudy, chief of Disaster Risk Reduction in the UN Environment Programme, explained why the news on Chinese eggs cannot be believed.
"It has been 10 years since the artificial egg news broke in China, later it reached Hong Kong, Singapore, Indonesia, Philippines and finally in India after a decade. It is a good story. A big factory, where Chinese make 1000s of eggs using maida and chemicals. The people who eat them get sick and die. But, the story has a problem. Nobody has seen any artificial eggs in any of these countries [translated from Malayalam]," Muralee writes on his Facebook account.
He also explains that selling eggs is not a hugely profitable business. Since an egg costs Rs 5, the merchant buys it for Rs 4, taking a profit of Rs 1. So, they will be willing to buy artificial eggs from dealers only if its available for a lesser rate. The fake eggs have to be imported after clearing many procedures in China and India.
"It has to be noted that these eggs are perfectly made, though making them artificially is not an easy task. It will cost at least Rs 5,000 to take the 3D print of an egg. As far as I understand, China doesn't have a business model of spending Rs 5,000 for making something and selling it for Rs 5. Not just this, the mass production of artificial eggs will be expensive and such factories need license to operate and professionals to handle the machines," he adds.

FSSAI to opertionalise draft guidelines, launch logo for fortified food products

Fortification means deliberately increasing the content of essential micronutrients such as iron, Vitamin A, Vitamin D, Iodine, etc, in a food product so as to improve its nutritional quality with minimal risk to health.
The Food Safety & Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) will launch the logo for “fortified” food product and operationalise the draft guidelines for food fortification on Monday. Fortification means deliberately increasing the content of essential micronutrients such as iron, Vitamin A, Vitamin D, Iodine, etc, in a food product so as to improve its nutritional quality with minimal risk to health.
The draft guidelines, which were put in public domain on September 4 to invite comments and suggestions, set the minimum levels of micronutrients which could be added to certain products such as rice, salt, wheat flour, milk and edible oil.
“These operationalised draft guidelines, when launched on Monday, will be for the state governments and some companies which want to work on them as soon as possible,” said Pawan Kumar Agarwal, chief executive officer, Food Safety & Standards Authority of India (FSSAI). He added the final guidelines would be issued only once the 60-day time period for receiving the public comments is over.
“We intend to operationalise the standards at the draft stage itself because several state governments want them to be in place so that it can implement them in their schemes quickly. For example, Karnataka is very keen to implement these standards for their mid-day meal schemes,” Agarwal elaborated.
Firms which will fortify its products would be able to use the ‘fortified product’ logo on them. “If someone is using the fortified logo, and if they are not fortifying it as per the prescribed standards, that company would be subjected to same penalty as for manufacturing unsafe or adulterated products. It means there would be consequences for not fortifying it as per standards. If a company is putting the micronutrient in the product, and if it is below the prescribed standard, then it can’t be called fortified at all,” Agarwal said.
If there is any change in the final guidelines, the states would be given a transition time to go from “operationalised” draft guidelines to final guidelines. “It is more than likely that changes, if there are any at the final stage, would be minimal,” said Agarwal.

Govt mulls making food fortification mandatory: FSSAI

In order to address malnutrition, government is considering making food fortification - adding of essential micronutrients - mandatory in wheat flour, rice, salt, edible oils and salt.
At the same time, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI), which earlier this month issued draft regulation on allowing food fortification, has decided to soon operationalise these standards even before it issues final notification.
FSSAI is organising 2-day summit on fortification of food on October 16-17 in the national capital to draw the roadmap.
"Fortification is a cost effective and quick way to address malnutrition. We have issued a draft regulation on fortification of foods and sought public comments. We will soon operationalise this draft as several states want to start fortification," FSSAI CEO Pawan Agarwal told reporters here .
Fortification means deliberately increasing the content of essential micronutrients in food to improve its quality. In draft standards, the FSSAI has covered five food categories -- wheat flour, rice, milk, edible oil and salt.
The FSSAI has set standards for fortification of salt with iodine and iron; of vegetable oil and milk with Vitamin A & D; wheat flour and rice with iron, folic acid, zinc, vitamin B12, vitamin A and some other micronutrients.
The draft enlists standards to encourage production and consumption of fortified foods. The rules also provide for FSSAI's role in making fortification mandatory.
Agarwal said the regulator will notify final regulations based on comments from stakeholders, who can sent in their views on the issue by the first week of November.
"Option for making food fortification mandatory is being examined," he said, while emphasising on the need for getting supply side ready for this process.
"The government will take a final call," he said, adding that this could be easily implemented in government programmes like PDS, mid-day meal scheme.
Besides operationalising the draft regulations, the FSSAI will also unveil logo for fortified food on Sunday.
"We are setting standards for fortification of foods as our mandate is to provide not only safe but wholesome food. By setting standards, we are prescribing minimum and maximum limit of fortification in the five food categories," he said.

'Food testing labs to be upgraded in next two-three years'

New Delhi, Oct 14 (IANS) The government will be spending Rs 490 crore in the next two-three years on upgrading and setting up new food testing laboratories (FTLs) across the country, an official said on Friday.
Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) CEO Pawan Kumar Agarwal said 45 FTLs would be strengthened across the country while special attention in this regard will be given to four northeastern states of Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Mizoram and Sikkim.
"The government has recently approved Rs 490 crore for upgrading and strengthening FTLs across the country. The idea is to upgrade at least two FTLs in larges states and one in smaller states and union territories," he said.
There are 114 FTLs operating in the country of which 112 are NABL accredited private labs notified under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006.
"Besides setting at least three new FTLs, there is proposal to set up 62 mobile foot testing labs (MFLs). There will be at least one MFL in each of the states and union territories," said Agarwal adding that at least 8-10 private labs were under consideration for notification under the FSS Act.
The FTLs have been facing challenges in terms of availability of sophisticated analytical equipments and trained scientific and technical manpower, he said. "The target is to standardise the FTL network in the next two-three years," he said.

World egg day today- Fake? Not eggxactly

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: With reports of artificial eggs being sold creating a scare, the food safety department said that they did not find any proof for the claim.Experts in the field too expressed doubts regarding reports on `Chinese fake eggs'.
Senior officials of food safety department said that they had collected samples of allegedly artificial eggs three months ago and had sent them to Centre of Excellence in Meat Science and Technology (CEMST) under Kerala Veterinary and Animal Science University , Mannuthy . However, the samples were found out to be real eggs.
"We saw several reports about fake eggs. But we are yet to get any proof that such eggs exist. We have contacted Ports department to check whether such eggs were imported to the country . We did not get confirma tion from food safety and standards authority of India either on presence of such eggs," said a senior food safety official.
George T Oommen, director of CEMST, confirmed that the samples alleged to be "Chinese fake eggs" turned out to be real following the tests conducted at their centre.
"The samples collected by food safety department from Thiruvananthapuram and Ernakulam had deformity . The yolks could not maintain consistency in shape once they were frozen. Most of these eggs might be frozen during transportation and hence the change in shape," he said. Referring to media reports of egg membranes getting burned when lighted, he said it is normal.
Oommen said that instead of panicking, people can check by themselves whether the egg is real or fake."Candling - a process of holding the egg above light in a dark room - is one method. We could clearly see the yolk and how it lies suspended in the egg. Boiled eggs too can be inspected. The eggs have special features like an air sack on one end, which gets bigger as it gets older. There will be various layers in an egg, which is impossible to be produced artificially," he said.
Though there were several reports about artificial eggs on Thursday, food safety department was unable to collect samples and co-ordinate activities due to hartal.
"We have been running egg wholesale business for many years and have not come across artificial eggs.We think that the news going the rounds about Chinese eggs is fake," said A Sudheer, owner of Mallissery Egg Store, Nadakkavu, Kozhikode He said that alarmed by news reports, some customers have started enquiring whether the eggs are original.
"I also came across such misguiding posts in social networking sites but I am not convinced about the claims. We bring eggs from farms in Namakkal and we have not received any complaint from the customers so far," he said.
Fake rice scare
Similar to fake eggs, reports of plastic rice being sold at various shops also surfaced in Kerala earlier in 2015. The rice, allegedly made in China, was said to be made of plastic. However, the food and safety department despite numerous inspections could not confirm the same.

Food safety dept receives complaint

PALLAKAD: The food safety department, which received a complaint regarding sale of spurious eggs at Cherpulasseryin Palakkad last month will collect samples at the check posts and different parts of the district and get them tested at the Veterinary College Laboratory in Thrissur.
The deputy commissioner of food safety K M George Varghese said that they received a complaint regarding sale of spurious eggs brought in a vehicle to some roadside shops last month.
Though the department tried to track down the sellers they were not successful. No other complaint has been received from the district in this regard, George Varghese said.
He said that there are no set standards for the storage and marketing of eggs. But tests can be done to determine if hormones were used on chicken.
The chances of artificial eggs being manufactured is very less since it is a sophisticated process, he said. "It will not bring much profit due to the low price of egg and its availability in large quantity, especially in places such as Namakkal inTamil Nadu, from where chicken and eggs are brought to Kerala," George Varghese said.
He said that food safety department will now regularly collect samples of eggs brought to the state and get them tested.

Ruckus over ‘plastic’ eggs

Just as the food safety authorities have got their act together to check the veracity of ‘farm eggs containing plastic’, referred to by a section of the media as ‘Chinese eggs’ by dispatching samples collected from stores in Ernakulam for lab tests, a group of BJP workers created boisterous scenes in front of a hypermarket at Vyttila, claiming that it had been selling ‘factory-made Chinese eggs’.
T. Balachandran, general secretary of the BJP for Thrikkakara constituency, who led the workers to the hypermarket soon after the hartal called by the party was over around 6 p.m., said the eggs supplied by an Edapally-based merchant under two brand names “contained plastic that burnt with a rustle”. One of the workers said the “eggs are manufactured at factories in China and reach Kerala through Namakkal in Tamil Nadu”, referring to some articles suggesting the same in language dailies in Malayalam over the past two days.
However, the food safety authorities said it was impossible to “manufacture eggs in factories”, nor could they be adulterated “by inserting plastic into the shell”. “However, since there was a huge public outcry, we collected samples from various stores in Ernakulam and sent them for testing in our own laboratory as well as at Kerala Agricultural University at Mannuthy.
“We are trying our level best to obtain the test result tomorrow [Friday],” he told The Hindu .
Officials, who did not want to be quoted, said the eggs in question could have been dipped in a wax solution for preservation, and that the thin wrap of what was described by people as plastic could be wax.
The phenomenon of eggs containing ‘plastic’ was first reported in Idukki district.
While K.P. Aravindan, president of Kerala Sasthra Sahithya Parishad, lamented the absence of critical thinking and common sense among a large section of credulous people who bought the factory-made egg story without an iota of doubt.
An article published on Luca , an online science magazine supported by the Parishad on Wednesday had called the doubters’ bluff by questioning the technical feasibility and economic infeasibility of the whole story.
It is impossible to manufacture eggs in factories, nor can they be adulterated by inserting plastic into shell.

Beware of 'Chinese' eggs!

Remember National Egg Coordination Committee's slogan, “Sunday ho ya Monday, roz khao ande (Be it Sunday or Monday, have an egg every day)”? Mind the last word, it is ande (eggs) and not anda (egg), I would argue with my mother as a child, in a bid to convince her to part with at least two eggs as part of my daily ration. Whether I succeeded or not is another story. Sigh.
Now, one would have to think twice before acceding to his or her child's request. For all the proteins that a humble egg packs in itself, having an egg might be a health hazard, if the reports of fake eggs flooding the Kerala markets are anything to go by. A regional TV news channel 'exposed' the fake eggs being sold in the markets in Idukki district, following which there have been reports of raids and confiscation of the fake eggs in other parts of the state, too.
Health Minister K.K. Shylaja has, reportedly, directed the state food safety commissioner to probe the matter.
Though the origin of the 'Chinese eggs', as they are being referred to, are yet to be known, some reports suggest they are coming in from Tamil Nadu.
How to check for 'Chinese eggs'
There is little in terms of appearance to differentiate between a real and a fake egg. The shell of the fake egg is slightly harder and rougher than that of a real one and there is a rubbery lining inside the shell.
On tapping a fake egg lightly, you will hear a less crisper sound than you would hear in case of a real egg.
If you break the egg and keep it for some time, the egg white and the yolk will soon mix with one another, since they are essentially made from the same ingredients.
The fake eggs do not stink even if cooked and kept in the open for days, and do not attract ants or flies.
When you fry a fake egg, the yolk will be spread without being touched unlike a real egg.
How they are made
The fake egg white is made by mixing sodium alginate to warm water, and then adding gelatin, alum and benzoic acid to the mixture.
The same mixture is used to make both the yolk, by adding a yellow colouring agent, and to make the fake egg membrane, by adding calcium chloride to it.
The fake egg shell is made from calcium carbonate, paraffin wax and gypsum powder.
And if you are wondering why take all the trouble to produce artificial eggs, then know this—it is much quicker to make an egg than to wait for a hen to lay one!

Ahead of Diwali, FSDA seizes 8,500 kg spurious ghee

AGRA: Food Safety and Drug Administration (FSDA) on Thursday seized 8500 kg ofspurious ghee from a factory in Gokul Nagar area here. Officials were amazed at the scale at which the illegal activity was going on in the factory, Shri Bihari Ji Food Industries.
FSDA designated officer Vineet Kumar said, "Agra vendors have created a new recipe for preparing ghee using vanaspati, refined soya bean oil and essence. A raid was conducted at Shri Bihari Ji Food Industries after a tip-off. Raids would intensify in coming day and several squads have been formed for this purpose."
He added that around 4000 Kg of vanaspati, 3000 litre refined soya bean oil, besides 1,525 kg of prepared ghee were seized in total. The shop is owned by one Anil Agarwal, resident Langde ki chowki.
Notably, UP chief secretary had recently informed the state government that Western UP is a hub for manufacturing adulterated food materials like synthetic milk and spurious edible oils.
Just last month, around 7500 litres of pungent-smelling adulterated cooking oil was seized by team of Food Safety and Drug Administration (FSDA) from Jagner Road, in Agra. The team of FSDA has confiscated the adulterated oil bearing the name of 'Delight Plus Mustard Oil' from the 'Agra Agro Company' and has sent the samples for the testing in laboratory.
Prior to that in August, more than 6000 liters of pungent smelling adulterated edible/cooking oil were seized. A team of nine members of FSDA had conducted a surprise raid at a private (Maa Gauri Oil) plant/godown in Barauli Ahir of Shamshabad road and found large quantity of adulterated cooking oil being dispatched to different districts such as Mathura, Firozabad, Etah, Agra and others.

Smokeless tobacco products increase death risk in prostate cancer

Nicotine or other non-combustion-related components of tobacco may play a role in prostate cancer progression.
Snus is a powdered tobacco product, often sold in teabag-like sachets

Washington: Consumption of smokeless tobacco product 'snus' on a regular basis may prove fatal to men with prostate cancer and can even lead them to the risk of premature death, suggests a new study led by researchers at Harvard University.
The findings, which are also influenced by previous studies showing increased risk of death from prostate cancer in smokers with the disease, suggest that nicotine or other non-combustion-related components of tobacco may play a role in prostate cancer progression.
Snus is a powdered tobacco product, often sold in teabag-like sachets, that is placed under the upper lip for extended periods.
Co-author of the study Kathryn Wilson, said, "Snus has been suggested as a less harmful alternative to smoking because it lacks the combustion products of smoking that are associated with cancer risk.
However, we found that men with prostate cancer who used snus were at increased risk of premature death." It contains nicotine but no combustion components, and has not been previously studied in relation to prostate cancer survival.
The researchers analyzed health data collected from Swedish construction workers during preventive health check-ups between 1971 and 1992, including a tobacco use questionnaire completed during each man's initial check-up.
Of these men, 9,582 later developed prostate cancer. About half of the subjects died during the follow-up period--2,489 from prostate cancer.
Those who used snus but did not smoke had a 24 percent increased risk of dying from prostate cancer and a 19 percent increased risk of dying, as compared to those who never used tobacco.
Among men whose cancer had not spread, increased risk of death from prostate cancer was three times higher than for never-users of tobacco.
Research associate Sarah Markt said, "There is some evidence from animal studies that nicotine can promote cancer progression, and snus users have high blood levels of nicotine. Snus users are also exposed to other carcinogens in tobacco even though it is a smokeless product."
Adding, "Taken together, this suggests that the health effects of smokeless tobacco products should be carefully studied by public health officials."
The study was published in the International Journal of Cancer.

You Will Not Buy Silver Coated Sweets This Diwali After You Read This!

Diwali is almost here and your preparations are on for the festive season. From cleaning the house to making some scrumptious dainties, there is so much to do. The best thing about the festival is the oodles of sweets that are prepared at homes, served to the goddess and exchanges between neighbours. But do you know you are actually eating harmful metals in the name of delicious sweets?
Vegetarian lobbyists claim that the silver foils that are rolled over your favourite sweets contain animal fats and parts of animal intestines. In fact, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India imposed a ban on the use of these foils on food items after it was found that the product is adulterated with aluminium and other harmful metals. In spite of that, the use of the foil is rampant in the country and gets a boost especially during the time of festivals.
With no clear demarcations made by the manufacturers on whether the product is vegetarian or non-vegetarian, the situation gets more difficult. In the next slides we will tell you what is all the hullaballoo related to these edible foils and how to check whether you are eating silver or some other metal when you are eating sweets this Diwali.

FSSAI asks customs dept to check imports of sweets, chocolates, cereals

Mumbai: The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has asked the customs department to keep an eye on the the imports of sweets, chocolates and cereals raising concerns over the sale and distribution of food business operators (FBOs) not complying with the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, at the points of entry, in the wake of the approaching Diwali season.
Sabita Jaiswal, assistant director (imports), FSSAI, said, “The enforcement authorities at the points of entry are always directed to keep a check on the imported products, especially on festive seasons.”
“A recent meeting held in this regard concluded that FSSAI should submit a list of the the officers who collect samples to the customs department. Some officers have already reported the delays in the system.” she added.
FSSAI and customs officers are jointly directed to collect and examine the samples at the point of entry during the season.
Speaking on the sampling, Jaiswal said, “Currently, FSSAI officers are located at customs ports at Tuglakabad, Patparganj, IGI Airport, Faridabad, Ballabhgarh, Loni and Dadri. The officers are directed to ensure there was no delay in taking samples for examination from these centres.”
The customs department is also keen to establish a single-window clearance system for the goods where the test reports by FSSAI are positive which will cut down the delay.
The Central Board of Excise has issued a circular to the officers to make it clear that the facility of labelling of imported goods in bonded warehouses had already been provided to importers subject to certain procedural conditions. The officers are directed to keep a vigil on all the points of entry.
Amit Lohani, convenor, Forum of Indian Food Importers (FIFI), said, “The importers have issued with the time consumed at the point of entry. The food products which are positive or the ones which pass the tests should be cleared faster. Earlier, it was promised that risk-based analysis will take place at the point of entry but it is yet carried under pro rata basis.”
“Actually the situation is very different on the ground. On an average, it takes around 15-20 days for clearance of an import consignment,” he added.
Lohani also concluded that the importers are themselves supporting the establishment of the single-window clearance system at all levels.

New food norms to open up value-added market

According to the draft guidelines, 850-1,100 parts per million iron can now be added to salt to hike level of micronutrients
The Food Safety & Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) is drawing up guidelines on fortifying rice, milk, wheat flour, edible oil and salt.
Existing food standards require salt to be fortified with iodine. According to the draft guidelines circulated among stakeholders, 850-1,100 parts per million iron can now be added to salt to increase the level of micronutrients. The move acquires significance since it opens up the value-added market for branded commodity players.
The final guidelines will be released on October 16 during a special FSSAI food summit in Delhi. FSSAI’s Chief Executive Officer Pawan Kumar Agarwal said the guidelines would help address the issue of malnutrition. “This is the first step, there is more work we will do in this area,” he said.
Companies, scientists and researchers are expected to attend the two-day summit to discuss food fortification. “We will study the guidelines to see how we can come out with food that fits the requirements,” said S Nagarajan, managing director, Mother Dairy Fruit & Vegetables.
“We are working in the area of value-added or premium milk. So allowing for fortification in milk will boost this effort,” he added.
R S Sodhi, managing director of Gujarat Co-operative Milk Marketing Federation, which manufactures the Amul brand of dairy products, welcomed the development.
The draft guidelines say toned, double toned or skimmed milk can be fortified with a minimum level of 770 international units of Vitamin A and 550 international units of Vitamin D. Edible oil can be fortified with 25 international units ofVitamin A and 4.5 international units of Vitamin D, while wheat flour or atta can contain at least 20 milligrams (mg) of iron, 1,300 micrograms (ug) of folic acid and 10 ug of Vitamin B-12.
“We will explore how we can fortify our products now that the final guidelines are ready. Food companies can now think of trading up with fortification,” said Anshu Malik, chief operating officer, Adani Wilmar, which manufactures the Fortune brand of edible oils.
Siraj Chaudhry, chairman, Cargill India, said companies now might have to build awareness among consumers of the need formicronutrients in food.
“Branded players consistently drove home the importance of iodine in salt, which helped in creating a market for it. Similarly, in other categories, there will be a need to build awareness,” he added.

India's next crude oil import saving plan, served from kitchen

Govt considering proposal to allow conversion of used cooking oil into biodiesel
Soon, the used cooking oil from restaurants such as McDonald’s, Subway, KFC and Haldiram’s could run your diesel vehicles.
If the Narendra Modi-led government has its way, the oil used to fry food items will be converted into biodiesel. The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) has asked the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) to come up with regulations on used cooking oil.
“We will rope in big food chains for collecting this usedcooking oil from them. A preliminary discussion with stakeholders in this industry was done earlier,” said a senior official from MNRE.
The final policy would be shaped only after FSSAI forms regulations for the quality, collection and usage of used cooking oil, said another official. The person added that both MNRE and the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas (MoPNG) have requested FSSAI and are awaiting for their response.
According to data by the Biodiesel Association of India, India uses 22 million tonnes of vegetable oil for cooking purpose. “After usage, the used cooking oil that India generates is 3-4 million tonnes. If these food chains give it to the biodiesel industry, it can earn them Rs 40-45 a litre,” said Sandeep Chaturvedi, president of BiodieselAssociation of India.
Used cooking oil can also be used by soap manufacturers, provided the policy is tweaked to allow this.
The roadblock before biodiesel companies to go ahead with this plan is the lack of any proper policy in the country. Currently, used cooking oil is a blacklisted item for both export and import. According to government instructions, cooking oil should not be used for more than three times.
According to biodiesel manufacturers, this may a profitable move for large cooking oil consumers such as restaurants. “If this happens, it will create a lot of feedstock for the biodiesel industry,” Chaturvedi added.
Currently, biodiesel is used for blending with diesel. It is part of the overall strategy by the Dharmedra Pradhan-led petroleum ministry to cut energy imports and carbon emissions. Currently, 2,500 fuel retail outlets in the country are using biodiesel for blending, while the Railways uses it for five per cent blending of diesel it consumes.
Currently, India’s dependence on oil & gas imports accounts for about 80 per cent of all petroleum products and 70 per cent of the total natural gas consumed. The Modi government has a target to cut imports by half by 2030. Last year, MoPNG permitted direct sale of biodiesel (B100) to bulk consumers such as railways, shipping and state road transport corporations.
Currently, the Railways is the largest consumer of diesel in India with annual consumption of 2.8 billion litres, out of which biodiesel blending comes to around five per cent. During the last financial year, the Railways consumed about 6,000 kilo litres of biodiesel. The Railways has invited tenders for procuring 50,000 kilo litres of biodiesel this year.
“With 10 per cent blending, the Railways can save Rs 392 crore a year on fuel bill,” Chaturvedi added.

Chhena or Paneer are by products of milk. Chhena is a common ingredient in sweetmeats. Starch is a common adulterant in these ingredients, & can be detected using iodine solution

FSSAI urges state enforcement agencies to review pending cases against FBOs

Mumbai: The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) asked the state enforcement authorities to review pending cases registered against food business operators (FBOs) during the regime of the Prevention of Food Adulteration Act (PFA), 1954 and other acts specified under Schedule 2 of the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006.
C S Gohil, food safety officer, Food and Drug Control Administration (FDCA), Gujarat, said, “We have pending cases which need to be reexamined or reviewed. If these pending cases are not of any significance, they will be settled as per the procedure prescibed under the Food Safety and Standards Act, calling the FBO involved.”
“Several states have such cases pending which are under the purview of different orders - milk, oil, etc. These cases will be studied at the state level. Depending upon the intensity of the issue, the state authority will take further action,” he added.
The food safety commissioners of all states and Union Territories may like to examine all pending cases against FBO under the provisions of various enactments and orders repealed upon the enactment of the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006 and take a view on withdrawal of the same, if considered appropriate. The results of this exercise may be shared with FSSAI from time to time.
According to a source from FSSAI, the initiative of examining the cases will decrease the burden on FSSAI. He added that the cases pending against FBO caught under PFA and other orders needed a review, and that the rules and regulations which are currently operational had undergone several amendments.
Gohil stated, “All the state commissioners will be part of this exercise at their respective offices. The reports will be furnished at regular intervals. They will be brought to the state commissioners’ notice, following which they will hold a meeting to initiate further actions.”

Adulteration check: FDA keeps eye on milk products, namkeen

INDORE: With festive season at its peak and Diwali round the corner, the Food and Drugs Administration (FDA) is on its toes to make sure that city residents don't fall prey to adulterated sweets and other food items during the season.
Since Ganesh Chaturthi the FDA has taken nearly 100 samples of sweets, edible oil, namkeen and spices. Out of total samples sent for laboratory testing in state capital, report of 30 samples has come. 10 samples were found to be misbranded, while six samples were of sub-standard quality.
Food safety officer, Manish Swami said, "During Ganesh Chaturthi, we took samples of sweets from shops near prominent city temples. We had also carried out inspections at Namkeen manufacturing units in industrial areas nearby city. Every week, teams conduct surprise inspection at least on three days. During this season, we have taken samples from 40 small-big units."
Swami also said that we will continue conducting surprise inspection especially on mawa sweets, namkeen, chocolates and gift packs shops. When asked about whether the delay in sampling and testing differ the result or not, Swami said, "Though the result of the samples takes time, collection of samples is a sign enough to make the seller conscious about food quality. Moreover, we do not have laboratory in Indore so we are dependent on Bhopal lab."
FDA officials are keeping a close watch on sweets, milk products and namkeen, which the officials say, are the main food items that are found adulterated. "From the lab reports that have come in the past, it has come to surface that non-food colour is being used in sweets. City residents should try and avoid coloured sweets, especially the deep pink ones, which might be adulterated," advised Swami. Customers can file complaints related to food adulteration with the department on the condition of anonymity too.
It should be taken to note that if any city resident is apprehensive about a certain food item that he or she has already purchased, then he can send it for testing to the food department personally.

Government makes strong pitch for packaged food in schools

State govt’s move on mid-day meal likely to save time and will provide relief to teachers.
JAIPUR: State education department is making a strong pitch for introduction of pre-packaged meals as part of the mid-day meal (MDM) scheme in government schools in the desert state to address the issue of nutritional balance in the diet for children. The idea was mentioned in the last budget speech of CM Vasundhara Raje as well.
Rajasthan government's move derived from the plan to serve hygienic, pre-packaged food, hot and fresh. According to sources such a move would save the preparation time and thereby providing much relief to the teachers. Besides, it would eliminate complaints regarding the quality of the food supplied to the children. Education department has written to the Union Human Resources Development ministry in this regard. According to sources the proposal of the Rajasthan government is under examination of the Union HRD ministry which requires an amendment to the MDM rules 2015.
The mid-day meal which is served in primary and upper primary schools across the government schools in the nation has to be "hot-cooked meal" as per the MDM rules.
The Rajasthan government pointed out that the pre-cooked meal will be more hygienic, easy to store and cook, and still can be served hot. It was also argued that it will give students opportunities to eat different meals on everyday which will increase the popularity of the scheme.
Besides it was also argued that the pre-cooked meals can keep a balance on nutritional standards which will help students to stay healthy.
However, some state chief ministers and other union ministers are said to be not in favour of allowing pre-cooked meals.
According to a research study published in MDM Scheme official website, the programme has helped improve attendance and enrolment of children, particularly girls apart from addressing the issue of malnutrition among children.

Spices are literally the essence of Indian food. Our food is characterized by its spiciness and rich flavor. The quality of spices being used directly affects the health of people eating it, hence it should be checked for signs of adulteration.
