We tested more 2700 product samples of MAGGI noodles including 1100 samples at independent accredited labs in India and abroad (Singapore, UK, Italy and Germany). These tests have found lead levels to be within the food safety limits specified by the Indian authorities as shown in the graph below.

Moreover, food standards authorities in USA, Canada, UK, Singapore, Australia & New Zealand have all tested samples of MAGGI noodles and confirmed that they are safe to eat

Reduce sugar content in dairy whitener: Food regulator

 

With India being home to a huge population of diabetic patients, the food regulator has asked the industry to reduce sugar content in dairy whitener used in tea and coffee in households.

Currently, the total added sugar for dairy whitener is 24 per cent by mass, which the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) wants to bring down to 18 per cent. The industry will be given two years to suitably modify the manufacturing process.

This was decided by the FSSAI in its 17th meeting held on May 18, the minutes of which were released last Friday.

‘24% sugar hazardous’

“There was near unanimity that the sugar level could not be kept at 24 per cent as a standard as it could be hazardous for consumers suffering from diabetes,” the food regulator said.

India is reported to have close to 65 million cases of diabetes, the second largest number after China. Union Health Ministry estimates suggest nearly 50 per cent of known diabetics cases—another 30 million plus—are undiagnosed and unaware of their condition and progressing towards complications.

A population-based diabetes screening programme carried out by the health ministry suggests high prevalence of diabetes in several states like Gujarat, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Bihar, Punjab and Sikkim where the prevalence varies between 7-14 per cent. The suspected prevalence of diabetes in urban slums is also high—about 12 per cent.

The industry representative, however, argued at the meeting that it might not be feasible for the manufacturers to switch to the 18 per cent sugar standard. But the regulator was firm that the industry had to shift to the new standard, as higher sugar level is a health hazard.

The 18 per cent sugar standard was fixed by the Bureau of Indian Standards, which the FSSAI asked the manufacturers like Nestle, Amul and Mother Dairy to follow. In the meeting, the industry was represented by the All India Food Processors’ Association.

Alcoholic beverages

In the same meeting, the FSSAI had also approved draft standards for alcoholic beverages and the necessary labelling conditions for imported liquors.

The official process has now begun to publish the draft notification on alcoholic beverages seeking public comments.

Earlier this year, the Central Advisory Committee of the FSSAI had given the go-ahead to make standards for alcoholic beverages like vodka, gin, whisky, rum, brandy and beer.

CHENNAI: If you are one of those who pick and chose anti-cholesterol food products to cut that little extra fat, you better read between the lines.

With growing scientific evidence on the side effects of sterols, a commonly used cholesterol-busting substance in packed food products, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) may soon mandate food companies to print a warning on the products.

In its recently released draft regulations, the authority proposed that all the food products containing sterols must mention that the food is “not nutritionally appropriate” for pregnant and lactating women and also for children younger than five years.

Besides, the label should also inform that that the per day intake of sterols should not exceed 3 gm. In other words, if a product contains one per cent sterol, you should not consume more than 300 grams of that product in a day.

FSSAI, the nation’s apex food standard body, proposed the norms following similar mandate by the European Union and several other Western countries last year.

Sterols is a type of plant-based fat widely used as an ingredient in milk-based food products, fruit drinks, edible oils and baked (bread) products.

While sterols often enable food companies to market their product as “dietary” or “healthy”, experts, concurring with the views of FSSAI, say excessive intake of sterols may kill “good” cholesterol, leading to potentially high risky health disorders.

“Only excessive LDL cholesterol leads to cardiovascular diseases. Other categories of cholesterol act as a vehicle to carry proteins, enzymes and other nutrients and support tissue formation and growth in children less than five years of age,” says M Singavelu, State president of the Indian Association of Pediatrics.

He points out that a lot of young parents provide their children sterol supplements to fight obesity, rather than worrying about the junk food they eat.

According to doctors, sterols is recommended only for children who have genetic disorders with high cholesterol levels (familial hypercholesterolemia). Several Western countries have mandated the food containing sterols to be labelled with a warning that it is strictly not for use of non-target group, i.e. people who are not in need to control their blood cholesterol levels.

“Since there are not enough studies on the effects of sterols on Indian pregnant women, it is better to avoid them. Low cholesterol might weaken the placenta and increase the risk of premature labour and other pregnancy-related problems,” says gynaecologist Vasantha.

Recent studies reveal that sterols was sometimes linked to higher risk of cancer, depression and cardiovascular disease. “We have given 180 days time for public opinion. After this, a final notification will be made,” an FSSAI official told Express.

SMC Drive on Food Safety

SAMBALPUR:With an aim to check spread of diseases during Dussera in Sambalpur city, which is set to witness a huge turnout for the Puja, the district administration and Sambalpur Municipal Corporation (SMC) have intensified drive against sale of unhygienic and stale food.

As a large number of people flock to the city during the Puja, fast food centres and eateries mushroom during this time of the year to earn fast bucks. However, little care is taken about the quality of food. With jaundice outbreak still fresh in the mind of the district officials, it was decided to launch the drive to ensure safety of the visitors, said sources.

The drive, which was launched on October 13, will continue till October 24.

As part of the drive, SMC has so far destroyed 2.51 quintals of inferior quality food in the last five days, said Food Safety Officer, SMC, Rudra Pratap Mandal.

A special squad formed for the purpose has been raiding shops in different areas of the city with the help of police and destroying food found stale or unhygienic for consumption, he added.

Besides destroying food, notices are also being issued to improve their shops and take corrective measures. Other directives like keeping the food items covered, surroundings clean and provision of safe drinking water have also been issued, Mandal added.

இதில், 15 ஆலை களில் ஆய்வு செய் யப் பட்டது. அல வாய் பட்டி யில் ஒரு சேகோ பேக் ட ரி யில் சந் தே கத் தின் இருந்த 51 ஜவ் வ ரிசி மூட்டை, அர மத் தாம் பா ளை யம் பகு தி யில் ஒரு சேகோ பேக் ட ரி யி லும் 96 ஜவ் வ ரிசி மூட்டை, மின் னக் கல் லில் ஒரு சேகோ பேக் ட ரி யில் 30 ஜவ் வ ரிசி மூட்டை கள் சந் தே கத் தின் பேரில் தனி அறை யில் எடுத் து வைக் கப் பட்டது. அதில் இருந்து உணவு மாதிரி எடுக் கப் பட்டு ஆய் வுக்கு அனுப்பி வைக் கப் பட்டது.

ஆய்வு முடிவு வரும் வரை இருப் பில் வைக் கப் பட்டுள்ள ஜவ் வ ரிசி மூட்டை களை விற் கவோ, வேறு பயன் பாட்டுக்கு பயன் ப டுத் தக் கூ டாது என அலு வ லர் கள் எச் ச ரித் த னர். ஆய்வு அறிக் கை யில் உணவு மாதி ரி களில் தவ று கள் இருப் பது கண் ட றி யப் பட்டால் சம் மந் தப் பட்ட ஜவ் வ ரிசி ஆலை உரி மை யா ளர் கள் மீது உண வுப் பா து காப்பு தர சட்டப் படி கடு மை யான நட வ டிக்கை எடுக் கப் ப டும் என எச் ச ரிக் கப் பட்டது.

Maggi faces production roadblocks

Lack of clarity on whether manufacturing bans in Punjab, Uttarakhand, Himachal, Goa and Karnataka still in place
Though popular instant noodles brand Maggi has passed the safety tests mandated by the Bombay High Court, it faces hurdles on the production front, owing to lack of clarity on whether state-wide bans across the five Nestle India facilities that manufacture Maggi are still in place or not.
The five plants are located at Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Goa and Karnataka. While Punjab, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand were among the first few states to ban Maggi, following the detection of contaminated samples in those regions, Goa and Karnataka followed. Goa banned the product in June as a "precautionary measure", while Karnataka first gave a thumbs-up to the product and then reversed its stand. Sources say the Nestle India management is talking to the authorities in Goa and Karnataka to allow production in these states. Goa is on top of the company's list, as a Central Food Technological Research Institute laboratory, approved by the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI), had found samples of Maggi sent by the Goa FDA to be in compliance with food safety norms.
Responding to queries on the issue, a Nestle India spokesperson said re-starting the manufacturing process was lengthy and complex. "We will evaluate where we can accelerate the process of re-starting production under the current circumstances," the spokesperson added.
Those in the know say resolving production issues will be critical for Nestle, as it looks to re-launch Maggi by the year-end. Earlier, Nestle India Managing Director Suresh Narayanan had said the company would press all levers to make the re-launch memorable.
For that, Nestle will have to commence production at the earliest.
Some say Nestle could have avoided the current logjam had it not terminated an agreement with Kolkata-based contract manufacturer SAJ Food Products last month. As West Bengal didn't ban Maggi, the issue of having to negotiate with state authorities wouldn't arise, they add.
The FSSAI-certified SAJ Food Products manufactured about four per cent of Maggi's annual volumes.
As Nestle didn't have its own plant to manufacture Maggi in the eastern region, SAJ was a key contract manufacturer.
While SAJ Chairman K D Paul said his company continued to manufacture other Nestle products, he declined to specify what led to the termination of the Maggi contract. "The decision (to terminate the Maggi contract) was taken by Nestle, as it thought it would be best to use its own production facilities," Paul said. "We not only remain manufacturers of other Nestle products, but also their leading distributors in the (eastern) region."

Maggi may return; fans ready forks

Popular instant noodles brand Maggi, may soon be back on shelves in the city, to the delight of its many fans.
“I will be very happy if Maggi comes back,” said T.P. Sneha, a student. A homemaker in Nanganallur, Tasneem Aferoz, said having Maggi noodles back would make for more relaxed weekends and fill in as emergency food. “I used to have it twice a week and I missed it,” she said.
On Friday, Nestle, the noodles’ manufacturer announced that test results from all three laboratories as mandated by the Bombay High Court, which checked 90 samples covering six variants, had come back clear, with lead much below permissible limits. But there’s still some time to go before Maggi could be back – manufacturing will commence now but sales will only begin after the newly-manufactured products also clear tests at the labs, its statement said.
A senior official of the State Food Safety department however said that only after instructions from the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) would Maggi be allowed back in Tamil Nadu. “In any case, we will put the product through a test once again here,” he said.
In June, the Tamil Nadu government had banned the manufacture, stocking and sale of Maggi noodles and three other brands — Wai Wai Xpress Noodles, Reliance Select Instant Noodles, and Smith and Jones Chicken Masala Noodles — for a period of three months, on the grounds that the products contained unacceptable levels of lead.
The official said that while all three brands had been told to submit their products for re-testing, only Reliance had come forward so far. “Their products have been tested, and results are awaited,” he said. He added that all the instant noodle brands would now be put through regular, perhaps monthly tests.
The controversy over Maggi first erupted after the product was found to contain high levels of lead, a toxic metal, in a test done in Uttar Pradesh. In Tamil Nadu, tests found that at least six samples had lead content higher than the mandated 2.5 parts per million.
On June 5, the FSSAI had asked Nestle to withdraw its noodles from the market, stating that they were “unsafe and hazardous for human consumption” on the grounds of excessive lead, mislabeling of monosodium glutamate on the packets and the release of Maggi Oats Masala Noodles without product approval. Nestle had then withdrawn Maggi noodles.
On Saturday, a post on cleared test results on the ‘Meri Maggi’ Facebook page had 4,087 ‘likes’ with comments such as: “My dear Maggi we are so excited on your return, that it feels like a long lost friend is coming back.”

State food ministry confirms it will challenge Bombay HC order striking down FSSAI ban on Maggi noodles
Nestle's woes with the Indian authorities with its instant noodle brand Maggi seems to be unending even after clearing the test mandated by the Bombay High Court.
Girish Bapat, cabinet minister for food, civil supplies and consumer protection, food and drugs administration, in Government of Maharashtra said that they are mulling over taking the case to the highest judicial body of the country.
"We have sought legal opinion on the issue within the government and the opinion suggests that we must challenge the Bombay HC decision in the Supreme Court. So we will go ahead," said Bapat at the sidelines of a BJP event at Pune.
The Bombay High Court had on August 13 struck down a Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) ban on Maggi noodles and ordered fresh tests. The Court had asked the company to retest at three National Accreditation Board for Testing and Calibration Laboratories (NABL).
Earlier this week, in a statement Nestle India said that the laboratories nominated by the Bombay High Court found lead below permissible limits in all 90 samples of six variants of Maggi noodles sent for testing.
However, the company had also stated that "Actual sale would start only after the newly manufactured products are also cleared by the designated three laboratories".
"Re-starting the manufacturing process and bringing Maggi noodles to the market is a lengthy and complex process, which requires alignment with several stakeholders, including our suppliers, distributors and retailers. Five of our eight plants have the capacity to manufacture Maggi noodles and all of these use state-of-the-art technology, follow the same stringent standards, are FSSC 22000-certified and all Nestle India plants maintain the same high quality. Now that we have received the test results mandated by the Bombay High Court, we will evaluate where we can accelerate the process of re-starting under the current circumstances," said a Nestle India spokesperson.

Nestle's Woes Continue, Live Insect Found Inside Baby Product Lactogen

Meenu and Sachin Sharma had bought Lactogen powder boxes in bulk for their child a few days back. They had even fed a carton to the infant. It was only when they opened the second box did they get the shock of their lives- a live insect inside the carton.

They immediately made a phone call to a team of food and drugs department and lodged an official complaint. The complaint led to a raid of the shop in Ghaziabad for selling suspicious content to the public. It is also alleged that the child had been feeling unwell after consuming the powder.

This isn't the first time an incident like this has happened. In June this year insect larvae was found in milk powder for kids. This mentally scarring incident comes into light just when Nestle got a go-ahead to resume the production of their most prized product, Maggi. We hope the child is safe and healthy.

Will Maggi Noodles be Back on the Shelves? Story So Far

Nestle India announced on Friday that a hundred percent of the Maggi instant noodles’ samples tested in the three laboratories recommended by the Bombay High Court have been found safe for consumption. This comes as a huge victory for Nestle India and for those who’ve missed Maggi. But there’s just one more hurdle Maggi noodles need to jump through.
Nestle India on Friday said all samples of its Maggi noodles have passed the required tests as directed by the Bombay High Court but it would hit the market after some time as the newly-manufactured product has to go through fresh tests.
"The manufactured products will undergo fresh tests at the three National Accreditation Board For Testing and Calibration Laboratories (NABL) labs in Mohali, Jaipur and Hyderabad. Once the tests confirm lead within permissible limits, we shall proceed with the sale of the noodles," a company spokesperson told IANS.
"Coming back to the market is complex and requires alignment with several stakeholders, including our suppliers, distributors and retailers, among others," the spokesperson added. On June 5, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) ordered a nationwide ban on the company's noodles on the ground that these were "unsafe and hazardous" for human consumption due to presence of lead allegedly beyond permissible limits.
"All 90 samples, covering six variants, tested by the three laboratories, are clear, with lead much below the permissible limits," the Nestle statement added.
The company assured it would continue to collaborate with the Indian food regulator, Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI), and other stakeholders on the issue. "In compliance with the Bombay High Court orders, we will now commence manufacture and will begin selling only after the newly manufactured products are also cleared by the three designated laboratories. We are committed to reintroduce our Maggi noodles (in the Indian market) at the earliest," Nestle said.
In the past few months, Nestle conducted around 3,500 tests representing 200 million packs in national and international accredited laboratories and all reports were clear. Besides, tests in several other countries like the US, Britain, Australia and Singapore also found Maggi noodles manufactured in India safe for human consumption.
In June, the FSSAI ordered a nationwide ban on the company's noodles on the ground that these were "unsafe and hazardous" for human consumption due to presence of lead allegedly beyond permissible limits. The MNC withdrew its instant noodles from the Indian market as a result and moved the Bombay High Court against the FSSAI ban.
A division bench comprising Justices V.M. Kanade and B.P. Colabawalla in August set aside the June 5 order of the FSSAI and also quashed an order of Maharashtra's Food and Drugs Administration banning production and sale of Maggi noodles in India and the state. The court, however, ordered fresh test on Maggi noodles' samples at three independent labs across India.
Nestle India was directed to send five samples of each variant to accredited labs in Punjab, Hyderabad and Jaipur and asked the labs to give reports within six weeks. The consumer affairs ministry filed a class action suit against Nestle India, seeking about Rs.640 crore in damages for alleged unfair trade practices, false labelling and misleading advertisements.
It was for the first time that the ministry dragged a company to the National Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission (NCDRC) under the Consumer Protection Act. However, the apex consumer court on Thursday ordered fresh tests on 13 samples of Maggi noodles from nine batches to determine lead and "MSG stock glutamate" content.
Nestle India on September 30 said that due to the ban, over 9,000 suppliers of Maggi noodles had gone out of business. Over 10,000-12,000 distributors also lost their livelihood. The company said it wished to resolve the matter as soon as possible and was "not interested in delaying it".
Suresh Narayanan, the India chief of the company, earlier said the "focus of the company is to get Nestle back on the shelves" and added that the "controversy had cast a shadow over Nestle's portfolio”. Narayanan told the media that the multinational company was targeting to get the product into the Indian market by the year-end.
Meanwhile, the shares of Nestle India rose by 5.6 percent to Rs.6,555, the biggest gain since August 5. The shares had plunged after FSSAI's recall order which resulted in the company's first ever quarterly loss in more than 15 years.

More than 70% small and big restaurants, stalls and on-wheel counters and retail stores involved in the food business do not have the mandatory food safety licence from the Jharkhand government to operate, according to food safety officials’ estimates.
Reason: The Jharkhand food safety directorate doesn’t have adequate food inspectors to implement the Food Safety and Standards Act (FSSA), 2006.
The FSSA makes it mandatory for a person or firm in the food trade to have a FSSA licence, which ensures that food items being sold are safe and unadulterated.
Currently the state has seven food inspectors for 24-districts and its additional 188 medical officers who doubled up as food safety officers have hardly been able to execute their additional duties.
“The state must make recruitments. The medical officer plan has hardly worked, as they are already overburdened with daily hospital and health centre work. They hardly sent food samples, conduct raids or serve notices to unlicenced or illegal food businesses,” said a senior food safety official, on anonymity as he is not allowed to speak to the media.
Food safety officials said that in Ranchi alone just 10% of roughly around 6,000 businesses have the licence and coverage was almost same in Jamshedpur and Dhanbad- Bokaro.
“We have already started the process if recruiting 24 food inspectors,” said director-in-chief Jharkhand food safety, Dr Praveen Chandra
“The registrations are tepid, this year till June we have just received 514 applications, most of them being from the Ranchi, Jamshedpur and Dhanbad.”

According to food safety directorate, since the FSSA was implemented in Jharkhand in 2013, just over 3,500 businesses have applied for registration and licence.
Chandra added that the department was surprised why food businesses were ignoring the FSSA despite the paltry registration fee and it had decided to increase awareness drives.
For businesses with less than `12 lakh turnover, the registration fee is `100, those with `12 lakh to `25 lakh turnover it was `5,000 and for turnover above `25 lakh it was `7,500.
Last year, officials slapped notices on more than a 100 food outlets for selling sub-standard and adulterated food during Durga Puja and Diwali as none had the FSSA licence.
Officials said that risk of consumption of sub-standard food, which causes food poisoning and serious stomach illnesses, increase during festivals with people eating outside on most days.
Chandra added that to cap sale of adulterated food in the state during the festive season the state had asked district officials to increase and start raid on food outlets.
Nimai Chaudhary, owner of a fast food stall at Firayalal Chowk said, “We don’t have any information on licence or how to get it. The department must inform us.”

Schools may soon have to stop serving food high in fat, sugar and salt, including deep-fried snacks like samosa and chana bhatura, under the guidelines issued by the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI).
The authority has issued draft guidelines on wholesome and nutritious food availability in schools that would be converted into a regulation in due course after following the prescribed process of inviting comments and suggestions from various stakeholders.
The guidelines, officials claim, would help control consumption of junk food among school children in India. Prepared by the an expert committee constituted by FSSAI, the guidelines provide a scientific background on how consumption of junk food high in fat, salt and sugar is linked with growing non-communicable diseases like obesity, diabetes and hypertension among children.
The draft guidelines have suggested a new policy for school canteens along with ban on sale of junk food in and around schools. "Canteens in schools should not be treated as commercial outlets. They have a social responsibility towards inculcating healthy eating behaviours. They should motivate children to consume healthy and hygienic food. A suitable canteen policy that ensures nutritious, wholesome and healthy food for children should be developed in consultation with the health ministry and education ministry," said the official.
"Unhealthy diet leads to metabolic changes and conditions such as overweight, high blood pressure, raised blood glucose and cholesterol, which are among the leading causes of no communicable disease deaths in India," said a senior official in FSSAI.
"Numerous studies conducted on school children of Delhi, Amritsar and Southern India show the increasing rate of obesity. In urban post-pubertal children, it has increased from 16 per cent (2002) to about 24 per cent (2006). It is high among the affluent class and children of private schools compared to low and middle-income groups," the official said.
NGOs have responded in positive to the guidelines. "We welcome the order issued by the food authority. It is important to regulate junk food in schools," said Sunita Narain, Director General, Centre for Science and Environment.

FSSAI takes junk food off school menu

NEW DELHI: The country's top food regulator is set to restrict consumption and availability of junk food in schools. The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has issued draft guidelines on availability of wholesome and nutritious food in schools to control junk food consumption among children.
The draft guidelines propose to restrict sale or availability of food which are high in fat, salt or sugar content within 50 metres of schools' premises. This includes an array of food and beverages consumed by school children including chips, ready-to-eat noodles, pizzas, burgers, sugar-sweetened carbonated and non-carbonated drinks, potato fries (commonly called French fries) and confectionery items.
The draft guidelines have also suggested creation of a canteen policy and school health education programmes to make students and parents aware of the ill-effects of unhealthy food habits.
"The identified foods are based on an evaluation done out of available similar foods in India. They are considered unhealthy due to imbalance in nutrients i.e high in fat, sugar, salt and/or low proteins, fibres and nuts," said the draft.
The guidelines also say that the benefits of balanced, fresh and traditional food cannot be replaced; schools should not promote food items high in fat, salt and sugar and that children are not the best judge of their food choices.
The FSSAI's move was triggered by the Delhi High Court's directive in July-end, giving three months to the authorities to monitor availability of junk food in schools. Various health groups have been advocating against availability and sale of unhealthy food in schools.
"We welcome the order issued by the food authority. It is important that junk food is regulated in schools. However, we are not sure why it is taking so much time to be implemented," said Sunita Narain, Director General, Centre for Science and Environment.

It may not be just two minutes, but consumers can look forward to having their Maggi noodles soon. Nestle India on Friday said that three laboratories mandated by the Bombay High Court to test samples of the snack afresh showed that the lead content in the instant noodle is below the permissible limit.
“In compliance with the orders of the Hon’ble Bombay High Court, we will now commence manufacture and will start selling only after the newly manufactured products are also cleared by the designated three laboratories. We are committed to reintroduce our beloved Maggi noodles at the earliest,” the company said in a statement.
Maggi has been off shelves since June after the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) imposed a nationwide ban after finding it “unsafe and hazardous” for human consumption following tests in some laboratories.
The company challenged the decision in the Bombay High Court, which revoked the ban but said the samples should be tested in government-accredited laboratories and, if found safe, the product can be retailed in the market.
“All 90 samples, covering six variants, tested by three laboratories are clear with lead much below permissible limits,”Nestle said.
Paul Bulke, Nestle’s global CEO, had assured consumers in India during his visit in June that the snack is safe to consume, that it was just a bad phase, and that Maggi would soon be back on the shelves.
The company had stated earlier that the instant noodle, which had cornered an 80% market share before it was made to be taken off the shelves, will be back by the end of this year.
The ban led Nestle to destroy 27,000 tonnes of Maggi, ferried by 10,000 trucks to six cement plants where it was burnt, worth an estimated R320 crore. The company took a big hit as Maggi made up to 40% of Nestle’s India revenue.
At an individual level, Nestle India conducted 3,500 tests over 200 million packets in both national as well as internationally accredited laboratories. All the reports, the company statement said, are clear. “In addition to these, various countries including USA, UK, Singapore, Australia and others have found Maggi Noodles manufactured in India safe for consumption,” Nestle said.

Sale of Maggi noodles only after fresh NABL tests: Nestle

New Delhi: Nestle India on Friday said all samples of its Maggi noodles have passed the required tests as directed by the Bombay High Court but it would hit the market after some time as the newly-manufactured product has to go through fresh tests.
"The manufactured products will undergo fresh tests at the three National Accreditation Board For Testing and Calibration Laboratories (NABL) labs in Mohali, Jaipur and Hyderabad. Once the tests confirm lead within permissible limits, we shall proceed with the sale of the noodles," a company spokesperson told IANS.
"Coming back to the market is complex and requires alignment with several stakeholders, including our suppliers, distributors and retailers, among others," the spokesperson added.
On June 5, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) ordered a nationwide ban on the company's noodles on the ground that these were "unsafe and hazardous" for human consumption due to presence of lead allegedly beyond permissible limits.

Nestle India on Friday announced that it would start making Maggi noodles again as all samples of the brand have been tested and cleared by the three laboratories mandated by the Bombay High Court.
The judges had ordered the company to send five samples of each variant to three accredited labs in Punjab, Hyderabad and Jaipur and asked the labs to give reports within six weeks. However, it will take some time for the snack to be back on shelves as the company said it will only sell it after the three designated labs also clear the newly manufactured products.
"We have received test results from all three laboratories mandated by the Bombay High Court to test Maggi noodles samples. All the 90 samples, covering six variants, tested by these laboratories are clear with lead much below the permissible limits," Nestle India said in a statement.
The company, which had earlier said it was planning to bring back the Maggi noodles in the market by the end of this year end, said it is committed to reintroducing Maggi noodles at the earliest.
Emphasising that Maggi noodles are safe, Nestle India said it has conducted over 3,500 tests representing over 200 million packs in both national as well as international accredited laboratories and all reports are clear.

In June, the FSSAI had banned Maggi noodles saying it was unsafe and hazardous for consumption after finding lead levels beyond permissible limits. The company had withdrawn the instant noodles from the market.
Nestle India had challenged the ban in the Bombay High Court. In August, the court lifted the nationwide ban imposed by the Indian food regulator on Maggi noodles but ordered a fresh test of the samples in three independent labs.
The HC had observed: "It is not in dispute that the laboratories in which these food samples were tested were either not accredited by NABL or not recognised by the Food Authority under Section 43(1) of the Act or even if they were accredited or notified, they were not accredited to make analysis in respect of lead in the samples."
A Division Bench comprising Justices VM Kanade and BP Colabawalla also set aside the June 5 order of the FSSAI. It also quashed the order of Maharashtra's Food and Drugs Administration banning production and sale of Maggi noodles in India and the state.

NAINITAL: With Nestle India issuing a statement on Friday saying that Maggi samples had cleared the tests conducted by three laboratories as mandated by the Bombay High Court, and the organization will soon "commence production in their plants", the news was greeted with joy by the over 1,100 contractual workers and those associated with the production of the 2-minute noodle at the Nestle plant in Rudrapur. "It seems that our woes will come to an end soon. We were able to earn between Rs 8,000 to 12,000 per month while working in the factory. Since its closure, it has become very difficult to make ends meet," said Virendra Singh, a former contractual worker.
The 30-day extended ban on Maggi had ended in the first week of October, but no decision has been taken yet by the state government on extending or ending the ban in the state. Nestle representatives, when contacted, said that "they were in consultation with their legal cell about the sale of the product in the hill state." "In compliance with the orders of the honourable Bombay high court, we will now commence manufacture and will start selling only after the newly manufactured products are also cleared by the designated three laboratories. We are committed to reintroduce our beloved Maggi noodles at the earliest," said a company representative.
The news of Maggi production restarting was also welcomed by residents and shopkeepers. Sameer Saah, a resident of Nainital, said, "I have literally grown up eating Maggi. Because of the ongoing controversy, I have missed eating the noodles. Hopefully, we will have the product back on shelves in a better form soon."

Nestle India, maker of the country’s highly popular Maggi, on Friday announced all samples of recently-banned instant noodles have cleared the tests conducted by three laboratories as mandated by the Bombay High Court.
The move will now allow Maggi to be back on the shelves after it was banned over the presence of excess lead since June this year.
“All the 90 samples, covering six variants, tested by these laboratories are clear with lead much below the permissible limits,” Nestle India said in a statement. “In compliance with the orders of the Bombay High Court, we will now commence manufacture and will start selling only after the newly-manufactured products are also cleared by the designated three laboratories.”
The company said “it is committed to reintroduce Maggi into the retail market at the earliest”. However, analysts believe it could take up to six months to put back Maggi back on the shelves across India. “One of the challenges for Nestle is to fill up the pipeline again. From the day of production, it could take three to six months to reach out to the retailers in the far flung areas across India,” said Arvind Singhal, chairman of retail consultancy Technopak.
Various countries, including the US, the UK, Singapore, Australia and others have found Maggi noodles safe for consumption. Nestle claims to have conducted over 3,500 tests representing over 200 million packs in both national as well as international accredited laboratories with all the reports clear. “It is never easy to build the trust again… But an excellent communication plan and a crisp ad campaign could be a way out,” said Srinivas K Reddy, director, center for marketing excellence, Lee Kong Chian School of Business, Singapore Management University.
Retailers, however, reject the skepticism. “We missed Maggi because our customers missed it a lot,” said Darshana Shah, senior V-P, marketing, HyperCity, retail chain. “Despite the availability of many other brands, no brand was able to fill in the vacuum left by Maggi.”

இந்தியாவில் உணவு நிலை

மேலும் இனிமேல் தரக்கட்டுப்பாட்டு கொள்கையில் சமரசம் செய்து கொள்ளப்போவதில்லை. அதனால் இந்திய உணவு மற்றும் தரக்கட்டுப்பாட்டு கழகத்துடன் கைகோர்த்துக் கொண்டு இனி செயல்படப் போகிறோம்'' என கூறியுள்ளது. 

இந்த ஆண்டு டிசம்பர் மாதம் முதல் மேகி நூடுல்சை மீண்டும் விற்பனைக்கு கொண்டு வர நெஸ்லே நிறுவனம் திட்டமிட்டுள்ளது.

New Delhi: Nestlé India Ltd, the local arm of the Swiss packaged foods company Nestlé SA, on Friday said test results of Maggi noodles samples show that the noodles are safe.
“We have received test results from all three laboratories mandated by the Bombay high court (HC) to test Maggi noodles samples. All the 90 samples, covering six variants, tested by these laboratories are clear with lead much below the permissible limits,” the company said in a statement.
The Bombay HC, on 13 August, set aside a ban imposed by food regulator, Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI), on the sale of Maggi noodles and asked for retesting samples at three laboratories certified by the National Accreditation Board for Testing and Calibration Laboratories in Pune, Hyderabad and Punjab.
Nestlé had moved the HC following the FSSAI order on 5 June asking the firm to immediately withdraw all nine variants of Maggi noodles, calling them “unsafe and hazardous” for human consumption.
Nestlé will now commence manufacturing the noodles. But, the freshly produced Maggi noodles will have to undergo tests as well. Nestlé India, in a statement, said the company will start “selling only after the newly manufactured products are also cleared by the designated three laboratories”.
However, the company did not indicate any time line for Maggi’s comeback. “We are committed to reintroduce our beloved Maggi noodles at the earliest,” it added.

HC directs Haryana not to enforce ban on tobacco sale

CHANDIGARH: In an interim relief to the tobacco manufacturing companies, the Punjab and Haryana high court on Wednesday ordered the Haryana government not to use coercive methods to implement its decision to ban sale of tobacco products in the state. Justice Paramjeet Singh of the HC passed these orders after examining the complete record of the state government on the basis of which Haryana had taken the decision.

With these orders, there would be no ban on sale and purchase of tobacco products in Haryana till November 28 when the case would come up for hearing again. The matter had reached the HC in the wake of a bunch of petitions filed by companies Dharampal Satyapal Limited (DS group) and Trimurti Fragrances Private Limited (producers of Zafrani Zarda), and Smokeless Tobacco Association - a registered body of chewing tobacco manufacturers, traders, dealers, suppliers of tobacco and related products.

The petitioners had challenged the September 3 orders through which the Haryana commissioner of food safety had imposed complete ban on manufacture and sale of chewable tobacco in the state. The counsel for the petitioners Mohan Jain had submitted that the Haryana government order was without jurisdiction as per the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, and was in conflict with the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products (Prohibition of Advertisement and Regulation of Trade and Commerce, Production, Supply and Distribution) Act, 2003, which deals with the provisions of manufacture and sale of all types of tobacco.

Jain had submitted that while passing the order, the Haryana government had failed to take cognizance of the fact that tobacco in any food was prohibited by the above regulation, which made it very clear that tobacco was not a food product.

It was also argued that the petitioners couldn't be punished arbitrarily and be made to close their business of selling and manufacturing chewable tobacco on the basis of presumption that it caused damage to health of consumers without getting any corroborative evidence from any study being carried out by Haryana.

On September 3, the state food and drugs administration department had issued notification, under which, sale and purchase of tobacco products was prohibited for one year in the interest of public health. The ban also includes mix of other ingredients such as heavy metals, anti-caking agents except to the extent of specifically permitted as ingredients, silver leaf, binders, flavours, scents, fragrances, prohibited chemicals or any one of these ingredients.

Schools to be notified with the junk food guidelines

The country’s apex food regulator, FSSAI, has put up draft guidelines on its website intended to monitor the consumption of junk food by school children.

Under the draft guidelines, which were first submitted to the court last year, food high in fat, salt or sugar will not be sold within 50 metres of a school’s premises. This includes an array of food & beverages commonly consumed by school children including chips, ready-to-eat noodles, pizzas, burgers, sugar-sweetened carbonated and non-carbonated drinks, potato fries (commonly called French fries) and confectionery items.

The draft guidelines have also suggested creation of a canteen policy and school health education programmes to make students and parents aware about the ill-effects of unhealthy food habits. The guidelines if notified could bring about a paradigm shift in how food is consumed in schools in India. The move comes after the Delhi High Court had given the Food Safety & Standards Authority of India three months in a hearing to do so. This is a welcome move and has been hailed by many individuals and institutions.

The judgement was in response to a public interest suit moved in 2010 by a NGO which had raised the issue of easy availability of junk food and carbonated drinks to children and had sought a ban on these food items in schools.
