Coimbatore: The district food safety department organised ‘Food Safety Hub’ at the corporation swimming pool complex in the city on Sunday.
The hub had several exhibits on hygienic and nutritious food and demonstrations of simple methods to detect adulterated food in homes.
Designated food safety officer B Vijayalalithambigai said the event aims to spread awareness on nutritious and hygienic food to public, mainly school children. “Also, when we conduct the hub at a location, we also inspect whether all the food outlets in the area have acquired lifetime registration with us. If not, we would bring them under the lifetime registration,” she said.
The swimming pool complex was chosen as lot of children visit the place, Vijayalalithambigai said. “We have identified five locations in the city where people come in large numbers: Marudamalai, Brookefileds Mall, VOC Park, Masaniamman Temple in Anaimalai and a famous theme park in Mettuapalayam. We would conduct food safety hubs at those places.”
The hub had a model pushcart to create awareness on how a proper food pushcart should be. Simple methods to detect adulteration in tea, salt, pepper and peas were demonstrated. Anganwadi workers and women from several self-help groups had put up exhibits on traditional foods. A medical camp for food handlers was also held. TNN
