PUNE: Days after TOI reported about the sad state of affairs at Savitribai Phule Pune University's canteens and mess, the Food and Drug Administration conducted a surprise check and found that the premises do not follow Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) norms.
TOI had reported on October 25 about the lack of hygiene in mess and canteens, and that FDA had not inspected any college canteen or mess in three years. SP Shinde, assistant commissioner of FDA, said, "This (surprise checks) will be conducted in all educational institutes in the city . Proper action will be taken against those who don't follow food safety norms."
The problem arose after students at the varsity complained to authorities about the bad quality of food at the girls hostel mess and a campus canteen.
"A lot needs to be improved in terms of cleanliness of the area where food is prepared and in keeping food hygienic. We have issued notices. They are supposed to get their act together within 14 days. Another inspection will be done. If they are found to have faults, licenses can be suspended and later cancelled," food safety officer K S Shinde said.
