Vijayawada: As many as 20 food safety teams conducted surprise raids in restaurants near Kanaka Durga Temple, PNBS and other eateries in the city on Monday. The officials confiscated artificial colouring agents and stale items.
Food safety department official N Purnachandra Rao and controller and food inspector Sekhar Reddy conducted the raids and issued notices to the erring food joints. Further, they inspected edible oil shops and godowns.
The teams comprised food safety officials from Krishna, Guntur, East and West Godavari districts. They collected samples of the ingredients and some food items for examination. They found spurious 'manchuria' being served at an eatery near PNBS. The officials seized around 15 kilograms of the item. In Durga Bar on Pinnamaneni Polyclinic Road, officials seized adulterated chicken and issued notices to the owners.
Later, a few fruit shops were raided, where huge quantities of rotten produce was seized.
"We found many of the hotels using substandard ingredients. More such raids will be carried out till pushkarams," said Purnachandra Rao.
