Meerut: To check adulteration in the festive season, a four-member team of the Food Safety and Drugs Administration (FSDA) destroyed nearly 200 kg sweets white rasgullas at manufacturing units in Jasad and Jainpur villages of Meerut's Sardhana tehsil on Thursday.
The rasgullas were being prepared in bad sanitation conditions and were emitting foul stench when the FSDA team reached the spot. It is learnt that the total cost of the destroyed sweets was Rs 36,000.
Giving information, Chief Food Safety Officer JP Singh, said, "Several small units have mushroomed in rural areas of the district where sweets are prepared and supplied to shops in Meerut and other nearby districts. We conducted raids in three villages of Meerut's Sardhana tehsil -- Jainpur, Daahar and Jasad -- where adulterated sweets were found."
Samples of white rasgulla were collected from three manufacturing units in Jasad village and two manufacturing units in Jainpur village. Samples of milk cake were also collected from Daahar village on Thursday.
"In Jainpur, three samples of rasgullas - one from Yameen and two from Vakeel were collected, while two were taken from Shakeel and Shorab in Jasad village. One sample of milk cake was taken from Yashveer in Daahar village," added Singh.
The samples have been sent to a laboratory in Lucknow and the report is likely to come in 20 days.
Singh said, "Prima facie it appears that starch was being used to make rasgullas and sooji was mixed in milk cake. We're awaiting the results from the lab in Lucknow."
