Meerut: To check adulteration during the festive season, the Food Safety and Drugs Administration (FSDA) authorities raided restaurants, sweet shops and milk dairies in Sadar bazaar on Friday.
The shops were identified by Cantt health officer Lt Col Atul Puthia and the raiding team headed by VK Verma comprised four persons.
While one quintal of tomato sauce, 10 kg each mustard oil and sambhar and 1 kg tamarind sauce were destroyed by FSDA officials, as many as 11 samples including mawa, mustard oil, tomato sauce were collected from the shops and sent to a laboratory in Lucknow. The report is likely to come in 20 days.
Giving information, chief food safety officer JP Singh, said, "A total of 11 samples were collected in the raid. These included one sample of kalaakand from Bengal Sweets in Bombay Bazaar, one sample each of milk and maawa from Raman Dairy on Hanuman Chowk, one sample each of chilli sauce, tomato sauce and paneer from China Town on Hanuman Chowk, one sample each of curd from Bansal Dairy and Ravi Prakash Arora Dairy in Rajban, one sample of paneer from Sohni Dairy and one sample each of milk cake from Vipin Kumar's shop and Chacha Ji Ki Puraani Dukaan in Rajban."
The FSDA officials not only collected samples but also destroyed substandard items during the raid.
"During the raid, we destroyed substandard products which emitted foul stench and looked adulterated. About 1 kg tamarind sauce was destroyed at Bengal Sweets. Black-coloured mustard oil, which was being used repeatedly and sambhar which was one day old were also destroyed at Bengal Sweets. One quintal tomato sauce was also destroyed at China Town restaurant. Prima facie it looked like it had food colour, which is prohibited in the preparation of sauce," added Singh.
On the directions of district magistrate Pankaj Yadav, FSDA officials will continue to conduct raids during the festive season.
