Officials from Food Safety and Drug Administration Department in The Nilgiris conducted a surprise raid in the baking and manufacturing units of two bakeries in Udhagamandalam on Monday and destroyed baked items prepared and kept under unhygienic conditions.
Food Safety Officer for The Nilgiris R.V. Ravi said that the raid was conducted based on complaints from public that ‘varkey’ and other bakery products such as cakes were made under unhygienic conditions and that it posed a threat to public health.
On Monday, the raid was conducted in two manufacturing units at Bombay Castle area in the town.
The units had their bakeries at another place in the town. “We found the raw materials and products kept in poor conditions and destroyed the raw materials and finished items,” he said.
The units were warned to maintain quality of food items and to maintain baking units clean and neat. Dr. Ravi said that they would continue action against such units in the town as they are much sought after by people of the town and are in demand among tourists, too.
