Kozhikode: Adulteration in food items seems to be rampant in the state with the latest entrant being rice mixed with polymers. Food safety officials are concerned over the growing issue of adulterated rice entering the markets of Kerala. However, the state is not equipped to check this.
It has been found that adulterated rice is sold in Nadapuram in Kozhikode. When rice is put in boiled water, generally a white layer is formed on the starch water. If the cooked rice is strained, the thin layer becomes thick and looks like plastic. If this is kept under the sun, the thin layer becomes burning plastic.
Officials have found that adulterants are added to the normal sack of rice and sold in the market. There were complaints from Singapore and Vietnam about adulterated Chinese rice. With concerns being raised from international circles, these kind of fake rice are seen in the state too.
