T. Anuradha, District Designated Officer, Tamil Nadu Food Safety and Drug Administration Department, inspecting adulterated spices and millets at a godown at Shevapet in Salem on Tuesday.
Adulterated spices and millets that were kept for distribution in other districts were seized in large quantities at a godown in Shevapet here on Tuesday.
Based on information, a team led by T. Anuradha, District Designated Officer, Tamil Nadu Food Safety and Drug Administration Department, inspected the godown located near Mulapilliyar Kovil on Siddhar Koil Main Road. Fennel seeds, cumin seeds, peppercorns, mustard and fenugreek seeds were purchased in bulk quantities from Gujarat and resemblance of these products were also purchased from New Delhi.
Later, chemicals were mixed and the adulterated products are packed and sent for sales in other districts.
About 400 bags of spices and millets and 75 bags of adulterated products were found in the godown.
Officials said that the adulterated products cannot be easily differentiated with genuine products and consumption is much harmful for humans. They said that samples were taken and would be sent to Government Food Laboratory in Udayapatti in Salem.
After obtaining the results, further course of action would be decided, they added.
This is the first time in the city that adulterated spices and millets were found in godown. The godown was sealed by the officials.
