Twenty-five-year-old Raja of Santhaiyadiyur swooned after he allegedly consumed ginger beer, a bottled drink from a petty shop in Seidunganallur, on Monday. Based on a complaint by M. Ramasamy, Tahsildar of Srivaikuntam, a team of Food Safety officers arrived at the scene and took the beverage sample for testing. But the youth is said to be safe. He was treated as an out-patient in a hospital, M. Jagadis Chandrabose, District Designated Officer, Food Safety and Standards Act, said. The bottled drink was not labelled with essential details, including its shelf life. Licence of Nambirajan, the beverage manufacturer, was seized and a 21-day improvement notice was served on him. A colouring agent kept in the production unit at Karungulam was destroyed.
Officials collected raw materials of the beverage from the unit and despatched them for quality testing. Based on sample report from the lab, necessary action would be taken against the manufacturer. Other shops at Seidunganallur were also raided, Dr. Chandrabose added.
