Food safety bill: Fresh suggestions sought

The Union Cabinet Wednesday set aside the changes in Food Safety and Standards Act, drawn up by the UPA government, and asked the Health Ministry to come up with a fresh draft incorporating various observations and orders by the courts on the matter. The amendments would be suggested after talks with stakeholders.
The UPA government had proposed amendments to the Act to expand the composition of the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India and dispense with some conditions in public interest, while making regulations on food items.
The Bill had been introduced in Rajya Sabha in February this year.
The Bill needs to be further amended after taking into account the judgments of the Supreme Court, Lucknow Bench of the Allahabad High Court and representations received by the government.
