Unaware about the Food Safety and Standards Act (FSSA), 2006, food safety officers (FSO) in Navi Mumbai mandated that commodity brokers register their establishments. As a result, the latter were confused.
A delegation representing the Federation of Associations of Maharashtra (FAM), led by its president Mohan Gurnani, met Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration (FDA) commissioner Mahesh Zagade, and impressed upon him that brokers were in no way concerned with food articles.
Following their discussion, the department agreed and concluded that brokers did not have to registered under the Act. In a telephonic conversation with FnB News, Gurnani confirmed the development.
“They asked the commodity brokers to register themselves, leading to confusion among them. However, the department has agreed, and the brokers of commodities need not register themselves,” he said.
