BHOPAL: Union government deadline to obtain licensing and registration under Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) ends on Tuesday.
About 2.5 lakh food business operators (FBOs) have been registered in Madhya Pradesh, according to state Food and Drugs Administration (FDA).
According to state FDA, there are an estimated seven lakh FBOs in Madhya Pradesh. State FDA is in the process of registering another two lakh FBOs which includes canteen owners, street vendors to restaurants. Implementation of FSSAI Act of 2011has been postponed many times over the last two years. However, if it comes into force from Wednesday, FDA inspectors will have the authority to randomly check any eatery.
If found without licence, FSSAI can penalize the restaurant or even have the outlet shut down."FDA has not harassed any FBO in the past and nor do we wish to do it now," said state FDA commissioner D D Agarwal. Last week, chief minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan said he will urge Prime Minister to change the FSSAI Act. In 2012, discussion over implementation of FSSAI stirred a hornet's nest for the restaurant industry in Madhya Pradesh. It had then led hotels and restaurants to down their shutters to protest new FSSAI Act. Mandi workers in Bhopal had protested about the same last week.
