Sub-standard food items seized

Imphal, October 26 2013 : State Food Safety officials seized fungus and insect infested foods from different hotels today.
In a press conference held at the office of Directorate of Health Services, Deputy Food Safety Commissioner Brojen-dro Khaba said, the officials conducted a drive to examine the quality of food items being sold at the hotels of Paona Bazar, Thangal Bazar, BT Road and Alu Gali areas.
During the course of their inspection drive, the team de-tected insects and fungus in the food items sold at many of these hotels, he said and added that the team seized the items to initiate action against the respective hotel owners.
Moreover, a shop was found selling unlicensed pac-kaged drinking water bottle, 'Yes', he said.
Manufactured at Yairipok in Thoubal district, the brand had been banned some time back for not acquiring necessary IS number and license, the Deputy Director said.

Brojendro also appealed to the people of the State to be careful in buying food items from the hotels of Imphal market, he added.
Our Thoubal Correspondent adds: A large quantity of expired food items were found selling at different shops located in and around Pallel Bazar in Thoubal district.
The food items were detected and confiscated during a drive conducted by Social Development Organisation (SDO), Pallel.
SDO Secretary Sachin T Mangang said that after selling of expired food items was reported in Imphal, the organisation conducted a drive to check the menace at Pallel Bazar yesterday evening.
During the drive, many shops were found selling expired Sprite and Coca Cola soft drinks, biscuits, sweets, toasts, pickles, rasgula, sweets, packaged milk powders etc.
Expired items worth around Rs 50,000 were seized during the drive, he added.
While appealing to the authority concerned, particularly the food safety officers, to conduct drives regularly and take action against those who are selling expired food items, the secretary urged the general public to be careful and vigilant in this regard.
The confiscated expired food products were displayed before the media today.
