During a routine check at Market yard, Food and Drug Administration (FDA) officials unearthed a racket wherein a trader was selling blended oil, claiming it was mustard oil.
FDA officials seized nearly 2,445 litres, worth approximately Rs 2 lakh, of the product being sold under the brand name ‘gau chap’. According to FDA officials, on Thursday, they were conducting a check when they came across a unit — Agarwal Trading Company — that was selling the oil.

“When we received information from food safety officers, we raided the place and seized the ‘gau chap’ oil from the trader. The packaging mentioned the oil as mustard oil, but when we checked the fine print it said blended oil.
This is totally misleading,” said Dilip Sangat, assistant commissioner, FDA (Food). FDA officials have also found that product was not certified by the government. According to the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, there should be an Agmark certification for such blended oil, “There is no Agmark on the packaging, so this is a violation of norms,” added Sangat.
Suspecting that several shopkeepers haves stocked the product, officials have recalled the product from traders, and have also appealed to citizens to return the oil to shopkeepers. FDA authorities have also got in touch with their counterparts in Rajasthan where the manufacturer is based.
“We have notified the Rajasthan FDA officials to act against the manufacturer. We are also checking whether the same oil is given to other distributors and have called back the oil from shopkeepers,” said Sangat.
According to officials, the oil is blended with 60 percent mustard oil and 40 percent rice bran oil. FDA has seized around 51 oil tins of 15 litres, 136 cans of 5 litres and 2,000 plus half-litre packets of the mustard oil from the unit.
