Two food-processing units, running in Ranchi without licences, were sealed on Friday.
A district administration team cracked down on the units at Adarsh Nagar in Kokar and Lota Factory Road in Chutia following a tip-off to food inspectors Gulab Lakra and Krishna Kumar Singh who are deputed in the capital for quality control.
While the processing unit
at Kokar was churning out tomato and chilli sauces, besides noodles,
the one at Chutia was producing pickles in addition to all the above
mentioned items. Both were being run from houses, the latter being
comparatively bigger with machines for cutting vegetables and storing
them.
Subdivisional magistrate Amit Kumar
said the units were shut down under provisions of the Food Safety and
Standards Act (2006) after product samples were collected for quality
tests.
"A licence is mandatory to run
any food-processing unit. The assistant chief medical officer (ACMO) of
the district is supposed to issue the permit on the recommendation of a food inspector. The units that were sealed today did not have valid papers," Kumar added.
He maintained that the samples collected from the units had been sent
for tests at Namkum and, if adulteration was confirmed, action would be
taken against the owners.
