Agriculture officials during an inspection in Jalandhar.
Jalandhar, January 5
Teams of the Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare Department inspected 40 roadside jaggery manufacturing units here on Saturday.
The teams led by Chief Agriculture Officer Dr Nazar Singh monitored the production process in these units. The manufacturers have been asked not to keep jaggery in the open on roadside for sale.
Chief Agriculture Officer said, “Punjab Agricultural University has already imparted training to jaggery manufacturers for preparing a safe and quality product under the Mission Tandarust Punjab. The training was aimed at enhancing the quality and hygiene of the produce by ensuring chemical-free manufacturing. The teams exhorted the manufacturers to keep the jaggery in glass jars or air tight boxes for sale. They were asked to use high standards while manufacturing.”
He added that these measures will not only improve the quality of the jaggery but also increase the income of the owners as people love to buy safe and healthy products.
They were also asked to get a licence from Food Safety and Standards Authority of India.
