Kozhikode: Food safety department has launched Safe and Nutritious Food @school project in Kozhikode. The project aims to inculcate students with the values of healthy eating habits and the importance of a balanced diet and nutritious food for the development of brain and body.
The food safety department has envisaged the project as part of capacity building awareness programme under the enforcement of Food Safety and Standards Act 2006. The scheme was envisaged in the backdrop of rising consumption of junk and unhealthy food by the younger generation.
The food safety department will conduct various awareness programs covering high school students. The food safety officials will conduct awareness programmes on food safety and healthy eating habits at schools. A nutritionist or dietician will take classes on balanced diet and importance of nutritious food. Food safety department will also spread the awareness on the importance of preventing wastage of food among students.
The project will cover 40 selected high schools and a total of 100 students from each school will be selected for imparting training on selected topics. They will be assigned to conduct classes for other students in their respective schools. School level clubs will be formed for the effective execution of the scheme.
P K Eliyamma, assistant commissioner food safety, Kozhikode said that through the move we aim to inculcate a healthy eating habit among the students by conducting a series of interactive sessions for them. “The message about healthy eating habits will also be propagated among their families and friends as well,” added Eliyamma.
