JAMMU: A Food Safety team of Food and Drugs Administration (FDA), J&K challaned canteens of four Government Degree Colleges and stopped commercial activities of two of them for violations of Food Safety rules.
To make sure that safe and nutritious food is served in educational institutions, a Food Safety team conducted a special drive in educational institutions within municipal limits of Jammu under the supervision of Commissioner, FDA, J&K.
The inspection team was headed by Dr Parvesh Kumar, Assistant Commissioner, Food Safety, Jammu. During the drive, canteens of four colleges namely SPMR College of Commerce, Jammu, Government Women College, Gandhi Nagar, Government MAM College, Jammu and Government Women College, Parade, Jammu were challanged under Section 56 of Food Safety and Standards Act 2006 as food were being cooked and stored there under insanitary and unhygienic conditions.
The commercial activities of canteens of Government MAM College and Government Women College, Parade were also stopped till further orders. The canteen operators were asked to maintain sanitary and hygiene as per Schedule 4 of FSSA 2006.
In order to minimize the cross contamination and food borne diseases, they were asked to maintain storage, processing and washing areas and use good quality raw material for cooking. Further, they were asked to maintain personal hygiene at all levels.
