Madurai: Food safety officials from Madurai district sensitized school students on the best eating practices on Friday, the first World Food Safety Day after the united nations general assembly has decided to observe it on June 7 last year.
With the rise of eating fast food and packaged food habits amongst children, the programme aimed at urging them to get rid of unhealthy food habits, the officials said. Besides students, teachers were educated about healthy substitutes and were asked to sensitise the students. Food safety officials led by designated officer Dr M Somasundaram took part.
Instruction on healthy and unhealthy foods were put on display in the programme where students were introduced to healthy substitutes to packaged foods. At the end of programme, children took pledge against eating unhealthy food.
“Both the health minister and health secretary have zero-tolerance for adulteration and banned additives like coloursin food items,” Somasundaram said.
He said they insisted students not to fall prey to colourful food as they can cause various health problems. A model snack box, consisting traditional food was handed to each student.
